Publisher's summary
The tomb of China’s First Emperor, guarded by an underground army of terra-cotta warriors, has remained sealed for more than 2,000 years. Though it’s regarded as one of the greatest archaeological sites in the world, the Chinese government won’t allow anyone to open it. Why? That question is at the heart of a dilemma faced by former Justice Department operative Cotton Malone, whose life is shattered when he receives an anonymous note carrying an unfamiliar Web address. Logging on, he sees Cassiopeia Vitt, a woman who’s saved his life more than once, being tortured at the hands of a mysterious man who has a single demand: Bring me the artifact she’s asked you to keep safe. The only problem is, Malone doesn’t have a clue what the man is talking about, since Cassiopeia has left nothing with him. So begins Malone’s most harrowing adventure to date—one that offers up astounding historical revelations, pits him against a ruthless ancient brotherhood, and sends him from Denmark to Belgium to Vietnam then on to China, a vast and mysterious land where danger lurks at every turn.

Must be focused to listen!
This book is interesting but I have found it very difficult to keep track of all the names and their associated roles... I am only halfway but have had to restart it twice and finally ended up writing a character list. It might just "be me", or the ethnocentricity of being blocked for non-Euro-American names, but it is really causing me to lose sight of the entertainment value. Plus, unless there is some crazy twist at the very end, it seems that the end is revealed in the Prologue (!?)

Normally I am a big fan of Steve Berry, and the work Scott Brick does narrating his books. This one, not as much. Sprawling is sometimes good, but messy isn't , and this one seems to get messy. Cotton Malone and his ongoing adventures gets caught up in internal Chinese politics, and the result is like leftover take out, abit cold, and messy. I listened to the end, and am not slamming this story, but I never really warmed up to it.

History & Cotton Malone... A++
I read a good share of the reviews before I started this book. I had just read The Paris Vendetta (Cotton, Book 5) and was thinking it may be time for change. The Paris Vendetta didn't hold my attentions as Steve Berry's other historical adventures have. But, that in part, is my fault, not Berry's. Simply put, Napoleon doesn't interest me.
I was a little gun-shy about purchasing this book due to #5 and the reviews I had read. I will say, I'm glad I did. This is a well written book about China's long civilization and its many impacts on our world today. In, Berry style, the historical data is very detailed, however, I didn't feel like he was just plumping up pages. It was all relevant.
Too, Berry did more for the characters in this book and starts tying together some loose ends we've seen from the beginning. If you like Whitt and Cotton as a team with more real-life interactions, you'll like what Berry's done. Cotton himself comes across less as a super-Agent and more like a man nearing 50 w/ the same issues we all have. Of course, you'll have all your Cotton action and adventure, but it seems more real.
If you don't want to read a book about China, learning it's long history, its many inventions and political philosophies, ie: Confuciusnism v. Legalists, you're probably not going to enjoy the book. I however did, and recommend this book to Cotton Malone and Steve Berry fans.

Disappointing
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. I've enjoyed previous books in this series, and will likely try another; but this one was quite tedious. It was a meandering story that lost me quickly and I couldn't even finish. Too bad.

If I'd Wanted a Droning Lesson On Chinese History
...I would have purchased a history book. Not a "thriller." This is the worst kind of writing drool: loaded with meaningless trivia, endless plot murdering debates and will-to-live draining tangents that are both predictable and stupid.
Flat uninteresting characters. Foolish plot "twists" and apparently no editor who could take the author and give him a shake saying "Why is THIS in your final draft???"
No surprises...so awful I found myself rooting for the villain. Truly the worst listen in a very long time. No more Steve Berry for me, thanks. I have no trouble sleeping.

A thin soup
Steve Berry has cooked a thin soup of alleged suspense and Chinese history, coupled with communist ideology and some REALLY BAD PEOPLE. I lost interest after about one third of the book but listened through it to the end anyway. Steve Berry is unable to create suspense in any section of this book. He tries to make the communists behave as really bad people, destroying valuable historical artifacts. Anyone who has actually been to China (and we are quite a few) knows the opposite is true. Mr Berry acknowledges in his afterword he has not even been to the locations in China he has used in the book. That makes less surprising he was unable to capture any part of the Chinese socitey or the background correctly in this book. My husband listened to this book as well, and when we compared notes afterwards, we were of the same (low) opinion. You can spend you time more wisely that listening to this.

What Went Wrong?
The Steve Berry has done a wonderful job with all the other books in the series so far, but this one fell short for me.
1. The narrator Scott Brick changed the pronunciation of one of the main characters names. I have heard tons of books by Scott Brick and this is the first time he has done something like this so I'm not sure if it was him or someone made him do it. The new pronunciation sounds better but after you hear it one way for 5 books you should keep it that way!
2. The Berry uses a lot of Chinese terms and character names (make sense it's a book that deals with China, and Chinese culture) but it is very hard to follow along with when you are listening. In addition to this he will some times use a character fist to indicate that they are speaking, and he will then use there last name to indicate that they are speaking, almost in the same chapter. (Again makes it very heard to listen to)
3. Unclear who is speaking or thinking at certain times, again this makes it very hard to listening to.

Could have been interesting
I usually enjoy books with historical and cultural themes, though don't need a lot of detail in descriptions of fight action (read: a bit much in this book). Also, I think Scott Brick's woe-be-gone reading style was a serious detractor. I actually think some of the material could have been light-hearted, and most wasn't intended to seem sad. I think Mr. Brick is technically a very good reader, as he sounded pretty good when reading the addendum material, but the novel itself really needed a wider repertoire of emotion, if any was called for at all.
