Publisher's Summary

Stephen King returns to The Dark Towerin this second, mesmerizing volume in his epic series. After his confrontation with the man in black at the end of The Gunslinger, Roland awakes to find three doors on the beach of Mid-World's Western Sea, each leading to New York City but at three different moments in time. Through these doors, Roland must "draw" three figures crucial to his quest for the Dark Tower. In 1987, he finds Eddie Dean, The Prisoner, a heroin addict. In 1964, he meets Odetta Holmes, the Lady of Shadows, a young African-American heiress who lost her lower legs in a subway accident and gained a second personality that rages within her. And in 1977, he encounters Jack Mort, Death, a pusher responsible for cruelties beyond imagining. Has Roland found new companions to form the ka-tet of his quest? Or has he unleashed something else entirely? A savage struggle has begun in which underworld evil and otherworldly enemies conspire to bring an end to Roland's search for the Dark Tower.

Set in a world of extraordinary circumstances, filled with stunning visual imagery and unforgettable characters, The Dark Tower series is unlike anything you've ever heard. Here is Stephen King's most visionary piece of storytelling, a magical mix of fantasy and horror that may well be his crowning achievement. Don't miss the other volumes of Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

"Favorite book of the series, by far."

I just finished the entire Dark Tower series on audio and this book remains my clear favorite. An excellent effort by both SK and Frank Muller. This book had me laughing out loud many times. Roland is laughably out of place in the "real world" and it makes for some killer comedy. After literally forcing myself to finish book one (the Gunslinger), this book was a welcome treat. Without this fine performance I would have never stuck with it and finished the series.

I plan to walk away from the Dark Tower series as I'm pretty burned out on the whole thing right now. But in the future, if I ever listen to any of these seven books again, it would certainly be this one.

Think of it this way: This book is the payoff for gutting your way through book one. The light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. Cheers.

    "Could not put it down."

This was the book that hooked me into the series. A very unique story, Sci-Fi and fantasy mix with a huge upgrade in narration. Muller takes a little while to get into it. The first six hours he tended to end his sentences weird. But once you get comfortable with his style, the voices he uses absorbs you into the book. This was an easy five star rating. I only wish all 7 books were like this.

If you continue on with the other books you will find that it doesn't last. You will lose Muller in book 5 through 7, an unfortunate accident ended his career. Even the stories seem to lose uniqueness and become drawn out. At least, though, you get some great books in the middle like this one.

    "Completely spellbinding"

This book, written by King but lived by Muller, is absolute mind candy. From the moment I start listening to the anxious times I must pause this story, I'm completely immersed and feel as if I'm traveling along the beach with the forming Ka Tet.

I'm listening to the entire series and loving every minute of it.

Great character development. The plot never dulls. You get lost in the story wanting more.

Excellent storytelling. The performance was a little overly dramatic a few times. Warning: foul language.

"A pinch of Eastwood, a dash of Mad Max a sprinkle of Frodo. Each goes a long way."

I'm so glad I've just decided to visit the Dark Tower. Over the years I've really wanted to delve into the original "mash-up" adventure, but could never make time. But isn't that life? It has a strange way of bringing things in at just the right time. Besides, at 40, I feel I can relate to Roland and his persona so much more than at 20. A real timeless piece.

More setup which is frustrating because it shows the length the series, which is terrible news for an impatient reader like me, but at least a more compelling story than The Gunslinger.

The first three books are incredible, and while the rest are perhaps not as remarkable, they're still better than nearly everything else out there. So glad I found this!
