Publisher's Summary

A sharp, witty, and hugely entertaining debut novel, The Devil Wears Prada is The Nanny Diaries set in the world of high fashion. Welcome to the dollhouse, baby! When Andrea first sets foot in the plush Manhattan offices of Runway she knows nothing. She's never heard of the world's most fashionable magazine, or its feared and fawned-over editor, Miranda Priestly. But she's going to be Miranda's assistant, a job millions of girls would die for. A year later, she knows altogether too much: That it's a sacking offence to wear anything lower than a three-inch heel to work. But that there's always a fresh pair of Manolos for you in the accessories cupboard. That Miranda believes Hermes scarves are disposable, and you must keep a life-time supply on hand at all times. That eight stone is fat. That you can charge cars, manicures, anything at all to the Runway account, but you must never, ever, leave your desk, or let Miranda's coffee get cold. And that at 3 a.m. on a Sunday, when your boyfriend's dumping you because you're always at work, and your best friend's just been arrested, if Miranda phones, you jump. Most of all, Andrea knows that Miranda is a monster who makes Cruella de Ville look like a fluffy bunny. But also that this is her big break, and it's going to be worth it in the end. Isn't it?

I love all genres of books. However, when I listen to audio books as I clean, garden, drive they are better with a lot of heat!

    ""Enjoyable Easy Listening""

Having seen the movie, but not actually have read the book, I thought this would be a nice easy listen. I was right. Never boring and keeps you interested. You feel for the main character but you really can't believe that people like this exist.

Highly recommend if you have an interest in human nature and emotions, would like an insight in to the fashion world and what people endure just to be a part of it.

"watch the movie, skip the book"

Admittedly I only saw the movie once years ago, but as I recall it was quite funny. The book, though, gets old quickly as all we see (hear) is a whiny Ivy League graduate who seems to think that the world owes her success as a writer. (We only see any evidence of any talent in that area in the last chapter or two). The Miranda Priestly characters (the evil boss) in the book is simply a cardboard cutout with all the depth that suggests. The character that Meryl Streep played in the book was not so narrowly (shallowly) drawn and, as such, obviously had made a Faustian bargain to gain success. There is little sense of that in the book.

So, unless you're in to whiny, entitled college grads, skip the book and watch the movie. You'll thank me.

I think that most of the positive reviews were, in fact, thinking of the movie.

If you've seen the movie, then the characters in this book will have faces for you. I enjoyed the movie, but the book is so much better. It has laugh-out-loud quality.

    "So captivating!"

This is the best book I've found on here yet! I've only had it a week (probably less I think) and I've already listened to all nearly 14 hours of it. It is interesting, and well read, and a good laugh :)

    "Engaging"

Being a guy I was not pretty much interested in the looong details about fashion, but I really liked the way the situations illustration and feelings were taken care of.
The narrator is totally amazing though, I got very engaged with the story and the way she dramatized and mimicked, I finished it in couple of days :)

    "huge disappointment"

i absolutely loved the movie, so i was looking forward to this one.. and this is the first case in my life when a movie is 10000 times better than the book.. i'm only half way through, but the narrators annoying shrieking voice matches the whiny tone of the book.. i wanna slap Andy for the way she complains endlessly..
I really hate how the story goes sofar, and i deffinetly won't be listening to this one again.

"Not very funny and a bit boring"

The Devil Wears Prada has had a lot of hype surrounding it, unfortunately in my opinion it doesn't live up to the hype. I didn't find it funny or to have a very good plot. Three quarters of the book is her moaning about how bad her boss is and all the humiliating things she makes her do. You feel like saying to her if you don't like the job move on and do something else! It remains to be seen if this translates better on the big screen.

I loved the book, which was read perfectly by Laura Lefkow. The characters were varied and 3 dimensional and I really enjoyed hearing the plot develop. The film was good, but this was so much better. Brilliant.

    "Brilliant"

I really enjoyed this book. It was well narrated and very enjoyable listening, I was quite happy in traffic jams with this book. Yes she does spend the book moaning about her boss but that is the book, the story of just how far someone will go to get what she thinks she wants, and how she is drawn into the over demanding work ethic. The end is expected yet unexpected, brilliant.

    "Well read and written."

There were times when the plight of the staff annoyed and upset me - and isn't that a telling fact? I got involved in the story so much I regretted the fact that an English accent is identified with a bully in the mind of the main character. I liked the fact that there was no happy ever after ending (there was a price to pay for the job taking over). And these are just three reasons why I liked this book.

The reading was pitched just right, the pace superb and it was far more edgy than the film. Not a story to leave you complacent but also entertaining and at times laugh out loud funny. Well worth the time.

    "Laugh - I really did!"

This book was really good. Funny, thought-provoking and occasionally tinged with a bitter-sweet wistfulness, I thought it was the best book I had read for a long time. I had not, and still have not, seen the film, but I doubt if Meryl Streep would be right in the role of the fashion editor (who, after all, was English). Anyone who has ever worked for a boss who was maybe slightly unreasonable, should read this!

    "Not for me"

I'd heard this was a book about bullying and humiliation at work and I wanted it to be good. I've been bullied by more than one boss and I think I wanted something to identify with, or for one or more of the protagonists to change and develop through the book. It just didn't 'do it' for me at all. I couldn't understand why on earth the main character, Andrea, stayed, or why her boss, Maranda, became the bully she was. I'm afraid I didn't grow to like any of the characters in the book and didn't find it particularly funny. The narration probably was appropriate for the speed and tone of the book - it was set in New York so it was fast and harsh - but I had to turn the sound down when the narrator was speaking as the camp stylists as her screeching hurt my ears! There was some good writing, but not enough to give more than three stars. I haven't seen the film, but understand that the ending and even some of the main story is very different from the book.
