Publisher's summary

When the most eligible Earl of Rule offers for the hand of the beauty of the Winwood family, he has no notion of the distress he causes his intended. For Miss Lizzie Winwood is promised to the excellent, but impoverished, Mr Edward Heron. Disaster can only be averted by the delightful impetuosity of her youngest sister, Horatia, who conceives her own, distinctly original plans . . .

surprisingly amusing

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

yes, because it was cute

Would you recommend The Convenient Marriage to your friends? Why or why not?

This is cute in a melodramtic way. I found it hokey at first but then caught myself laughing out loud at times becuase of the conversations of the Viscount and his silly nonchalaunt way of looking at life as on ongoing wager.

Delightful (& Audio Book is complete -Spring 2011)

Delightful narration, Horatia's stammer is rendered delightfully, it is so easy to be captivated by this intrepid heroine. This was not one of my favourites by this author, but this enjoyable narration is changing my opinion.

Not the best Heyer but enjoyable

Although I did enjoy it I felt like it was just too long at some points really. It got almost monotonous towards the middle.

Disappointing

Not one of Heyer's best. Not a lot of humor and what there is rests heavily on the misunderstandings and antics of stupid and/or drunk young men. Some themes that are handled with a light touch in other Heyer novels (young bride, extravagant spending, gambling, duels) felt a little disturbing in this one.

Very entertaining

Enjoyed this story and the performance, although I found the voice characterization of Horatia a little off putting. She sounded older and clumsier than the text described.

But I especially enjoyed the contretemps of Horatias brother and his friends.

Overall....quite enjoyable.

I typically like JH books but

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Nothing... it is what it is.Ms. Heyer intended to write the book as it is and so changing the book is a none issue to me.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Phew, thank goodness!

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Perhaps

Any additional comments?

I just didn't enjoy the premise of this book. A very young girl; a child really marries a man nearly old enough to be her father, it just doesn't sit well with me. I didn't enjoy the book.

A Very Nice Escape

I love Georgette Heyer’s novels and this one did not disappoint with its narrative. Why are there no current movies based on these? They’re so much fun and the Regency era characters are introduced with such detail that I can actually see them. I highly recommend this if you enjoy Jane Austen novels.

I love the story, but

I love the story. The only thing I disliked is that the narrator makes the heroine sound even younger than she is. It makes it a bit creepy, when the hero is supposed to be 35.

50 Years

Fifty years ago, when I was 15 years old, I picked up my first Georgette Heyer book, The Talisman Ring, and thus began a lifetime of pleasurable experiences in reading. Georgette Heyer is in my top ten list of best authors, & when I am feeling most depressed by the vagaries of life, I turn to one of her historical romances to escape and transport me into a world so rich in description that I become a participant. I have read and reread ALL her books & this one is a particular favorite. I don’t look for hidden or sly messages about the hollowness of life or deepening inequalities causing further rifts amongst us, I just read for the pure joy I find in the stories she tells.

great story okay narration

I really enjoyed Georgette Heyer's story. Great characters laugh out loud situations. It took me a while to get used to the narrator's voice for Horatia. I got used to it after a while, but I think the stutter could have been handled better.
