©Trustees of the Wodehouse Estate; (P)1990 Chivers Audio Books
Jonathan Cecil's narration captures the comedic spirit of Wodehouse's magnificent story, one of the best in the Wooster & Jeeves series. The voice characterizations are a real treat, when one can hear them.
Unfortunately, as mentioned by other readers, most of the time the audio is barely audible. At times it sounds as if the book was being read under water. I would recommend that Audible invest in improving Cecil's recording.
I have to agree with the previous reviewer. This is a poor quality recording compared to most other books I have downloaded from Audible. Very sad because I think the narrator is wonderful, but the recording is distorted and blurred, impossible in the car and distracting any other place. I downloaded it twice just to make sure I had the best quality and there were no other problems, but they are the same. Hopefully, this can be corrected.
If you love classic British humor, and you haven't stumbled upon Wodehouse yet, you are missing out. The storylines are all similar, impossibly soap-opera-like and hilarious. The characters are mostly bumbling, not too bright aristocrats, with the occasional level-headed character that gets them out of their scrapes.
I found the recording of this book to be somewhat unclear, and recorded in too low a pitch to hear well in the car, even when the volume of the stereo was turned up all the way. The narrator's voice was slightly blurry, I'm not sure if this is due to the actor or the recording quality, but it definitely took away from the enjoyment of the novel.
"Sound quality is poor...."
I do adore the PG Wodehouse books narrated by Jonathan Cecil. However the sound quality on this book was atrocious, and completely ruined the listening experience
"Worst Soundtrack I've Heard"
To enjoy these books you need to hear them clearly. Having now bought over 20 of the PG Wodehouse series I've been seriously disappointed by the sound quality of this offering. I don't know about Audible, this sound track is Inaudible and not worth the money it costs. Jonathan Cecil is brilliant in every other purchase I've made but hand on heart you would do well to steer clear of this dud!!
They're all brilliantly conceived
Enough Said I think. Improve the recording soundtrack is all!
Everyone should listen to it. I have played it several times already and I find it excellent.
"Terrible sound quality - avoid"
The sounds is muffled and poor quality - sounds like it was recorded in the 50's
Very quiet with a hiss throughout. Totally spoils the whole experience & not worth the money.
"Very enjoyable but spoilt by recording"
voice and accent perfectt but fluctuations in volume spoilt it. Otherwise one of the best. .
"Sound quality not good"
Great story and performance but the quality of the recording is poor and muffled which impacts enjoyment.
"DO NOT BUY UNTIL YOU PREVIEW"
The sound quality makes this unlistenable sadly, unless you like your audio to sound like it is under a duvet.
"Jonathan Cecil is masterful."
Jonathan Cecil is masterful. Jonathan Cecil is masterful.
Shall i say it again? These are some of the best narrated audio books available.
"Just what the Doctor ordered!"
Having spent many years wondering if I should have partaken in some J&W thank God I finally have. Never before (except for the 39 steps) have I carried a smile for such an elongated amount of time as when I was turning (metaphorically) the pages of this perfect wound toy of a book. Such a deep warm joy!
