In the aftermath, museum archaeologist Nora Kelly is visited by an enigmatic, silver-eyed FBI agent who is obsessed with the mystery of the bodies. Together, Special Agent Pendergast and Nora Kelly embark on an investigation that will take them from the gleaming skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan to the crumbling archives of the museum, from a mass grave under a Chinatown brownstone to a house of abominations on Riverside Drive. Their search unearths the faint whisper of a mysterious doctor who once roamed the city...a genius who carried out medical experiments on living human beings.
But just as Nora and Pendergast begin to unravel the clues to the century-old killings, a fresh spree of copy-cat murders and surgical mutilation erupts around them.

"Richly entertaining...a great beach novel, at times gruesome, always fun." (Publishers Weekly)
The plot of this book has so many twists and turns that I, a seasoned mystery afficianado, was frequently left guessing or surprised. I listened to this book and was absolutely captivated. I made CDs of it and both my husband and parents listened to it and were captivated as well.
It fills the niche for lovers of many different types of stories: histrical, mystery, and a little bit of horror. The plot feels thoroughly researched and is incredibly believable. Judging from the reactions of myself and the 3 people I loaned it to, I don't think anyone will be disappointed.
Caution: Graphic and frequently freightening details...not for young listeners.
This is a great series. If you go to Lincoln Child and Douglas Prestons website you can see the order the books are in if you haven't been a fan from the start.
Absolutely - I have really liked all of their books and Rene Auberjonois is by far their best narrator. Pendergast is a fantastic character.
I think the unabridged version would have been a lot more enjoyable. This version just made huge jumps from one scene to the next - you know you have missed a lot of important details which Preston and Childs do really well.
The final scenes when they figure out who the "villian" is - watching Pendergast's moves is a lot like watching a good chess game.
I don't think that Audible carries the unabridged version of this book, which, I am sure would be a far superior listen than this.
Rene Auberjonois is a great narrator and Preston and Child are fantastic writers. They have created a modern Sherlock Holmes in Agent Pendergast. I can not get enough of this FBI Agent! All in all, very enjoyable listening!
I hate to read books. You can't do anything but keep you head in a fixed position and generally keep still. Now I can do mundane stuff and enjoy a good book on audio.
I've been listening to a few audio books on tape and enjoyed them. But this (MP3 on an IPOD) is the best so far. It's like a modern day American version of Sherlock Holmes with more action. Rene, the narrator, is wonderful in the many voices that he uses for the dialog of the characters and his elocution is first rate. It's like listening to a good radio drama (I know that I'm aging myself). The best thing is that you can turn it off and listen to the rest later and not miss the rest of the story.
After hearing this one, I had to read or hear all of the Pendergast mysteries. I'm hooked. And this one is my favorite. A fascinating, well driven plot, and well developed characters keep you not only interested, but addicted.
Cabinet of Curiosities were a real part of the 19th century, before museums were common. In and around the history of these a cerial murder takes place and the distant past and the present are blended together in a unique murder-mystery.
A very enigmatic, modern day Sherlock-Holmes, Special Agent Pendergast, with the help of archeolgist Nora Kelly, work together unraveling the past to solve the present.
The book is as well crafted as it is narrated. I'll look for more by the authors and the narrator. The only criticism might be that Nora Kelly goes along with the mysterious Agent Pendergast a bit too easily, but overall the book still gets 5 stars.
Grabbed me from the beginning, and didn't let go.Very creepy listening to this in the dark, believe me!
Quite graphic in some places, and not for the squeamish.
However..the story builds to a great ending, and it is worth it to suffer through all the goosebumps you will have getting there!
This amazing story is well read and keeps the listener on the edge of their seat. It has many elements found in modern detetive fiction, but is brilliantly combined with a very Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde or Jack the Ripper aura of horror. Fabulous!
This is a fast-paced book with an engaging plot line and a colorful main character (Pendergast). I won't say that the story is breaking any new ground, or that you won't be able to figure out what's going on before the twist is revealed - but if you're looking for something to keep your mind engaged while you're up to something else - this book will certainly do that. Great narrator too. I normally hate it when narrators try to affect an accent, but I thought it was very well done. Fun little book.
"Pendergast books are great"
Loved this book and all of the Pendergast books, All the character in these books become old friends and the story lines are out of the ordinary. 'They combine natural history, archeology and crime with a little crazyness thrown in.
This one is a great combination of all the above an you alway learn something new. It is well written and well read.
A really good story - Pendergast pretty good, but the narration was not the best...prefer Scott Brick or David Colacci. Has not put me off the books..yet!
There was a problem with my audio file; there are two glitches on the file that cut out the audio.
Otherwise, it's a good novel; really tense and Pendergast is on form!
