"Western read by a western voice."
Would you listen to The Beginning again? Why?

Yes I have listened to it twice. I just bought book two. The reader is a great voice to tell this type of story. If you listen to the preview you will probably get the book if you like westerns.

What other book might you compare The Beginning to and why?

It's a western but very different beginning so it is not like any other book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Suddenly they were Americans and not Southern soldiers anymore. The war was over and they went home to start their life in Texas.

    Story
"The adventures of Buck and Chester"

After the Civil War many soldiers on both sides did not know the war was over. Buck and Chester, our main characters learn of the cease fire only after an unfortunate, unnecessary battle, where all but four of them were killed. The Union shipment they com-endeared had letters announcing the end of the war and $20,000. Because there was no one to return the money to they decided to split it four ways. While two of the lower ranked soldiers were counting the money they decided it would be better to take it for themselves, well Buck and Chester ended up on the better side of that deal. Confederates stuck in the North had a very hard time making it back to their homes in the South because there were many that still had vendettas to satisfy.

They headed South from Virginia to Texas together and along the way they recognized that they had similar mind sets and specific skills that offset eachother. The trip was demanding and at times deadly but it helped them to learn to trust each other, develope a friendship and eventually become partners in the cattle business. They decided to purchase Longhorn cattle that at the time were pretty specific to Mexico but had an large untapped market in the US. It turned out to be very lucrative but dangerous. Adventures abound as these two rough and tumble, no nonsense characters go up against everything from Indians to cowboy desperadoes. A little romance, cherished family members and loyal employees round out this well told, Old Wild West story.

When the narration first started, Gene Engene's voice reminded me of the narrator of the old Walt Disney, documentary movies which made the live animals seem so funny. He does a great job with these tough characters. This would be an excellent series for anyone who loves old western TV series. Not my genre but I liked these characters very much and it was a great Daily Deal.

"Texas history after the Civil War"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Beginning to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version. I suspect I would like some of it better because of the unusual male voices interpreted by the narrator. Buck, Chester and Chester's dad's voices were on target, but others were choppy with strange inflections.

What other book might you compare The Beginning to and why?

    Hmmm, not sure.

Have you listened to any of Gene Engene’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Never heard him before. I enjoyed his story narration and main character Texas accents a lot. He did the female and Hispanic voices well also. But his attempt to make the other male characters distinctive was distracting.

If you could rename The Beginning, what would you call it?

Don't think I would rename it.

    Any additional comments?

Actually, I was exhausted after completing the book. There were so many tragedies emergencies and danger that I was cautious about starting each new chapter. That being said, the story was interesting and fast paced. The history of the cattle industry after the Civil War was well researched and fascinating. I did enjoy it, but maybe not enough to continue the series.

    "A Series Worth the Listening"

'Hear' are some characters from the American west that you will find yourself rooting for. A little stilted and predictable. But I happen to prefer typical 'good guys' to 'darker' characters and novels.
If you are a fan of Louis L'Amour or John Wayne westerns I think it's safe to say you will enjoy this.
This is entertaining, if lighter, reading. Although the descriptions of death and/or violence might be a little more graphic that necessary - for my taste anyway.
I will likely continue with the series.

"A little hokey, like the authors name"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

I felt like it was geared to a youth audience, I didn't get that when I bought the book.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I didn't make it to the end, I tried, even got close, but didn't make it.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

It wasn't bad, just too juvenile for me. The narrator was pleasant.

Do you think The Beginning needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Not for me. Young people, and perhaps the elderly folks would go for it.

    Any additional comments?

For me, this book was like tuning in to an old time TV western, entertaining for a while but too unsophisticated to keep your interest.

    "Love this book"
If you could sum up The Beginning in three words, what would they be?

    Excellent great super

What did you like best about this story?

There was 3 different nationalities working together respect for each other love for each other good wins not a bunch of nasty sex. Wonderful book!!!!!

What about Gene Engene’s performance did you like?

Great voice!! Read with such realism.

If you could take any character from The Beginning out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Pappy because he is tough but tamed El Torre instead of killing him. He saw the potential in the bull.

    Any additional comments?

Thank you for a great holesum book .

    "Not so much"
What disappointed you about The Beginning?

The entire story was slow moving. Many of the comments the main character made were just cheesy. I found myself rolling my eyes over and over.

Has The Beginning turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, I have read/listened to others of this genre and really enjoyed them. I love westerns, but this one just did not do it for me.

What three words best describe Gene Engene’s performance?

The narrator was ok, not great, not bad.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Beginning?

Most of the book seemed to be lacking a punch. I kept waiting for something big to happen, it didn't. I listened to the entire book and was not impressed.

    Any additional comments?

It's not a bad story, it just needed something more. The author's descriptions were good I could picture what he was describing, but the story just fell flat and predictable. I felt like the publisher must have "pushed" the author to complete by a date instead of giving the author the time needed to make it great. Disappointing.

What did you like best about The Beginning? What did you like least?

The way the two partners got their capitol to start a ranch.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Very interesting.

Would you be willing to try another one of Gene Engene’s performances?

    No thank you!
