Meet the Dog Who Will Show the World How to Be Human

The New York Times best-selling novel from Garth Stein - a heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope - a captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life...as only a dog could tell it.

"Splendid." (People)

"The perfect book for anyone who knows that compassion isn’t only for humans, and that the relationship between two souls who are meant for each other never really comes to an end. Every now and then I'm lucky enough to read a novel I can’t stop thinking about: this is one of them." (Jodi Picoult)

Not just for dog lovers

The story of Enzo and his life with Denny is an emotion provoking journey. This book gives a dogs insight and provides an different point of view for its readers.
I'd like to imagine that my own dog thinks and feels these same things Enzo expresses. Great book for anyone who loves to really feel an emotional connection with a story.

THIS WOULD MAKE AN AWARD WINNING MOVIE!

Awesome, uniquely interesting story!
Told from the point of view of a very intelligent dog, the story has so many layers, it is funny, poignant, heartbreaking and exciting. I never thought much about race car driving, but it was actually very interesting. As the human drama unfolds, in the hands of a less skilled writer, the story of sickness, loss and betrayal would seem overdone and become a little over the top.
This author shows you the love and admiration of a dog to his owner to the end of his life and beyond - it's just an amazing - this would make a great movie.

I loved this book

I knew I was going to cry, but I still had to listen. Such a beautiful book with great life lessons, told from the uninhibited viewpoint of Enzo, a very wise dog. I will listen again, and I don't usually do that with audio books.

A must read

This book is a must read for any dog owner/lover. However, I don't think the lack of dog ownership would reduce the enjoyment of this book. Simply put...this is a beautiful recounting of one man's life (the main character) mainly through the eyes of his dog, the bond between those two and the other people that come and go throughout the main character's life and the integrity that he chooses throughout his life. Not always a "happy story"....but life as it truly is....and yet a happy ending.

One of the BEST books I have ever loved.

Would you listen to The Art of Racing in the Rain again? Why?

I am going to listen again, because you always get more out of a book the second time you listen to it, but some are more worth the time than others. This is one of those that is more than worth it.

What other book might you compare The Art of Racing in the Rain to and why?

Marley and Me, in that the central character is a dog that you come to love like a member of your own family. It also has that element of how our dogs are truly bonded to we humans lucky enough to have them.

Which character – as performed by Christopher Evan Welch – was your favorite?

Enzo, the dog, of course. I believed I was seeing through a dog's eyes. I saw what he did, and knew when his imagination was taking over.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

"Race" to see this one!"

Any additional comments?

This would be a great movie - but Enzo MUST BE narrated by Tom Hanks. He would be the best dog ever.

A story with a unique perspective

This story made me think of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night". That book is told from the perspective of an autistic child. This one from the perspective of a dog. In both you are drawn into the protagonists world. Here the author does a marvelous job of giving the dog just enough human qualities that you can relate to his viewpoint yet you never lose sight of the fact a dog is narrating.
