The 13th | [John Everson]

The 13th

Castle House Lodge. A century ago it was an exclusive resort hotel. But for years it’s stood empty, a haunting shadow of its former glories. Now, after twenty-five years of rumors and ghost stories, the overgrown grounds are showing signs of being tended. The building itself has been repaired. Castle House has new occupants. What was once a haven for the elite is now a madhouse, a private asylum for pregnant women.

    "Not too impressed..."
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Time listening to any book is time well spent in my opinion.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narration was distracting. One glaring issue from my point of view was the fact that the narrator could not pronounce the word 'across', instead clearly pronouncing it 'acrosst'. That's right, with a 't' on the end. For some reason this word was used often enough that every time the narrator spoke it I was immediately drawn out of the story.
The narration was SO distracting I had to write this, my first review just to share my opinion.

    Any additional comments?

I've read many of John Everson's short stories over the years and always enjoyed his work. This book however, was my least favorite by far. The story itself was imaginative, but the descriptions with the overuse of basic adjectives was disappointing to someone familiar with his other work.

    "Horrible horrible book"
What would have made The 13th better?

A plot would help. The language was just too much.

What was most disappointing about John Everson’s story?

There didn't seem to be any reason for the entire story. I listened to the very end hoping it would make sense but it just didn't.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I love the narrator, that is the reason I bought the book because I had listened to him in another book but there just wasn't much he could do to make this book work.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment.

    Any additional comments?

NOt sure I will read another John Everson book.
