Fun Story Diana Rowlands fans will enjoy.

This story is about a girl named Ava, an average 32 year old waitress, kind of drifting aimlessly through life. After yet another relationship epically fails, she end up swallowing the contents of her medicine cabinet. Death ensues. However, it doesnt stick. She wakes up 2 days later, smelling an amazingly good smell. Well, that smell is a dead body. Ava has turned into a ghoul, and corpses are whats on the menu. So starts a wild ride where Ava gets a Teen sidekick she saves from an abusive, much older boyfriend, a controller in the local psychic(basically the supernatural cop on the block), and en enemy in the queen of the local vampire Kiss(Coven).
Ava is a really fun character who muddles along and still manages to succeed. She is well written, with a really good inner voice. The plot moves along nicely, and has lots of room to expand the storyline. Any fans of Diana Rowland's White Trash Zombie series should really be able to sink their teeth into this series.
As far as narration, Celia Aurora de Blas does a great job differntiating the characters, giving each a distinctive voice, all while moving the narrating along well.

I was given a copy of this audiobook by the author free of charge in exchange for an honest review through Audiobook Boom.

a good start for a quick and unique series

AudioBook Review: Stars 3 Narration 4 Story 3

Honestly, I grabbed this series of titles purely on the title and cover, thinking they were YA / Teen titles. The covers (and I rarely comment on these) are juvenile and feel amateurish/ cartoony, not quite up to depicting what is between the pages. No, Ava is 32, newly ‘changed’ to a ghoul, and her life, story and experiences depict just that.

Ava is a failed suicide, only to wake as a ghoul, as if her life could be worse. She’s also one of the window-lickers on the short bus, but this leads to some gloriously funny and often completely unrelated diversions as she sees something shiny and is consumed by it. Worrying about a dead end job, a cheating boyfriend and a lack of anyone caring when she’s been missing for days, Ava has to learn this ghoul thing all by herself. Well, she does catch up with some ‘friends’ that soon have her wanting to stake a couple of them.

Filled with diversionary thought patterns, humor and pop culture references, this is a funny set of tales with a heroine that isn’t particularly heroic, but charms you with her near total inability to function normally.

Narration in this story is provided by Celia Aurora de Blas, and she has that balance of ennui and careless toss off of words that suit Ava perfectly well. The asides that she shares are perfectly presented as “filler” info, and her sidetracks into moments that only she can connect until they are explained are wonderfully presented, with her quiet corrections / apologies for bad words that let listeners know that she is presenting HER story to you.

Solidly presented and written with insets of humor and a bit of ‘ghoul rules’, this is a good start for a quick and unique series

I received an AudioBook copy of the title via AudioBook Jukebox for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Totally not what I expected! IT was GREAT!!

Would you consider the audio edition of That Ghoul Ava to be better than the print version?

I think they would be about the same

What does Celia Aurora de Blas bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I like her attitude. Alot of females have that whine to their voices and she doesn't.

Who was the most memorable character of That Ghoul Ava and why?

Ava of course

An good introduction to a supernatural series

What did you like best about That Ghoul Ava? What did you like least?

I though this book was a good introduction to a new series. I think it has a lit of potential.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I thought the narration ciuld of been better. I do not think she portrayed Ava very well.

Was That Ghoul Ava worth the listening time?

Yes, it was intreasting.

Any additional comments?

I feel this series has a lit of potential. I also feel that at times the main character comes off as a but sim whitted and that is very disappointing. She is supposed to be a 32 year old character and she acts about 16 at times. The 17 year old acts and thinks like shes 32 so its a but backwards. The sarcastic humor is there I just wished Ava was not portrayed as a dimwhit. :(

Don't judge a book by its cover.

I loved this story. I found it entertaining and riveting. I especially enjoyed the interaction between Ava and Lisa.

This is my first time listening to this narrator. Her voice fits the main character's so well that I was captivated.

I’ll definitely continue with this series and I highly recommend it.
