Publisher's summary

That Distant Land collects 23 stories, interlinked with each other and with the other published "Port William" novels. The stories, arranged in their fictional chronology (from 1888 to almost the present day), become one sustained work, a new novel that spans the entire life and time involved. The range of this book is extraordinary - it offers rest for the weary, hope for the beleaguered, and strength for everyone else.

Heartbreaking, hilarious, spellbinding, wondrous..

Michael Kramer was made to read Wendell Berry. The amazing interweave of these stories that span generations of native Kentuckians will create such a yearning and longing in your heart, it will make you want to live better and richer.

Now I'll read everything Wendell Berry ever wrote

Full disclaimer: I'm a beginning organic vegetable farmer. The stories in this collection, spanning a century of life in one rural community, speak to all of the places in me that long for greater connection and community. Berry's stories gave me a vision for what could be on my own farm.

Thanks Wendell & Michael

Outstanding narration‼️ Narrator enhanced Wendell’s Kentucky epic❗️After listening to Larry Earnhart’s dreadfully read Jung’s Map of the Soul by Murray Stein I have a greater appreciation for skilled narrators. Thanks Michael Kramer for gifting Wendell with loving care & attention.

Wendell Berry, a man I would enjoy meeting.

In my opinion, the world would be best served if the public education system of the United States required students to read the collective works of Wendell Berry.

A homecoming

A journey with Berry is a homecoming of sorts. Seemingly everyday lives that are amazing in their everydayness. Can be listened straight through or stretched out over time to savor the completeness of each story and relationship to each other. Pitch perfect narration.

Simply beautiful

Berry is so good ad describing mundane things in a beautiful way. This book didn't grab me at first, because I didn't understand the style or story, but I became captivated after a few chapters. The performance is absolutely superb! The voices for the ladies are a little silly sounding, but otherwise the performance alone is worth listening to this book.

marvelous & heartwarming!

A great way to become intimately acquainted with many of the delightful characters and relationships that make up the Port William membership. Mr. Berry's characters and stories shine with the goodness of humanity.

Wonderful Storytelling

Loved the stories and characters. Looking forward to more of his works. How different things are now from that long ago era.
I know it wasn't all rosy, but the sense of decency from common folks seems to have become much more scarce these days.
Thank you.

A favorite

This is one of my favorite books of all time; one I’ve read and/or listened to more times than I can count. The stories are some of the most beautiful & moving in American literature, putting flesh & bone to the deeply Christian foundations of Mr Berry’s agrarianism. The performance annunciates points & imitates voices in a way consistent with what I’ve heard in my head when reading. Very nicely done all the way around.
