Publisher's Summary

The year 2060 is drawing to a close, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. It's a time for loved ones to come together. But sometimes the deepest hatreds seethe within the closest relationships, and blood flows faster than water....

For Lieutenant Eve Dallas of the NYPSD, the job is a useful reminder of what she has to be grateful for this season. Hosting Roarke's big Irish family for the holiday may be challenging, but it's a joyful improvement on her own dark childhood.

Other couples aren't as lucky as Eve and Roarke. The Reinholds, for example, are lying on the floor of their Downing Street apartment, stabbed and bludgeoned almost beyond recognition. Those who knew them are stunned - and even more heartbroken by the overwhelming evidence that they were murdered by their own son. Twenty-six-year-old Jerry hadn't exactly made a good impression on all the bosses who fired him or the girlfriend who dumped him - but they didn't think he was capable of this.

Turns out Jerry is not only capable of brutality but taking a liking to it. With the money he's stolen from his parents, and a long list of grievances, he intends to finally make his mark on the world. Eve and her team already know the who, how, and why of this murder. What they need to pinpoint is where Jerry's going to strike next.

    "Like visiting friends"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes. The Eve Dallas books are entertaining, easy fun reads.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I wouldn't These stories are well done. The characters developed and interesting. They are like watching a great ensemble television show.

Which character – as performed by Susan Ericksen – was your favorite?

    I love McNab.

Could you see Thankless in Death being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I can see the series as a TV series.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoy the friendship. I have enjoyed the growth of Eve's character. You can read just this novel and enjoy it. But the series is like visiting good friends.
These books are not Hemingway, which I do read, but if you want a good story with good characters, give the folks at the NYPSD a try.

    "Pretty lame this time"

If it wasn't for such a great narrator, this would be awful. First, it is unbelievable that such a genius detective and group would fail to miss who the next victim would be after the parents. Not the perps luck as the book claims, but just a dump plot. Second, too many details about each of the violent acts the perp commits and not enough "leave it to our imagination" and good dialog with the other characters. I have enjoyed some of the other books although they have a similar theme which is: you can have been beaten up and raped by your father but if you didn't pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get rich on your own, you are a loser... frankly, I'm sick of it.

    "liked the story"
Where does Thankless in Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Liked the story-the narrator was hard to listen to at times-like chalk on a blackboard with some voices

    "Hard to listen to"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

    The narrator.

If you’ve listened to books by J. D. Robb before, how does this one compare?

The book was good. I like this series.

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Ericksen’s performances?

Absolutely not!!! For most of the characters in the book her voice is so harsh and whiny it's so hard to listen to. I had to switch over to reading this book in some instances. I picked this to listen to on a road trip & it got so bad I had to turn it off. Like nails on a chalk board!!!

Was Thankless in Death worth the listening time?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

I will not be purchasing any more audio books she narrates.

"I was surprised how much I did not like this"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This is an incredibly popular series. It did not do it for me. I did not like the writing style and the overly simplistic storytelling.

Has Thankless in Death turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, I love the genre, just not this author.

What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?

She did a fine job. was easy to listen to.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I found myself yelling at the radio.

    "A Little Disappointed"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It passed the time. Except for the fact that I'm pretty well committed to listening to all the books in the series, in hindsight, this is one I could have skipped.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would like to see a murderer who is more smart and crafty than insane. I didn't buy the sudden cracking of the bad guy from a bumbling leach into a homicidal maniac. Even within the realm of suspending disbelief it was not convincing. And catching him was too easy. The obstacles seemed fabricated to mark time. I can't help but feel that Robb phoned this one in.

Which character – as performed by Susan Ericksen – was your favorite?

    Peabody. Who else?

Was Thankless in Death worth the listening time?

    I'm neutral on this.

    Any additional comments?

I haven't purchased the next book yet. Based on this one, I'm undecided if I will. This is unfortunate, since it's generally been a fun series to follow. I hate to suggest it should be retired, but if Robb can't pump some life back into it, perhaps it has reached or is nearing an end? (I would have liked to see Eve as a mother, though.)

    "Not Her Best"

I have read/listened to most of the series and as always, they are fast moving plots light reads. There is always a decent mix of future high tech gadgetry with a good criminal mystery backdrop. I was a bit disappointed in this one. Not sure exactly why, maybe because of the immature whiny nature of the villain or simply the lack of anything new and exciting. Maybe because not as much time was devoted to secondary characters that readers of the series have come to enjoy. I will continue to read the In Death Books for now, and hope they get back on step.

    "The BEST "in death" yet!"

I have either read or listened to every book in the series and this one is great. This one focuses on the hunt and the storyline is fast paced and the writing is tight. I love the continued character development and relationship between Roarke and Dallas. Susan Ericksen is a master when it comes to bringing the players to life, and I can't imagine anyone else reading this series. I stayed up till 3am to finish this one and didn't want it to end.
