Publisher's summary

Before he set down his pen, seven-time Spur Award winner Elmer Kelton—the Western Writers of America’s “Best Western Writer of All Time”—cut 50 notches on his gunbelt of classics. In this final novel of the Texas Rangers, a young lawman finds his mettle put to the test while bringing justice to a remote settlement. To stop a series of baffling killings and thefts, newly married ranger Andy Pickard is dispatched to a central Texas community where locals are quick to pin the crimes on two feuding cattlemen. As Pickard investigates, however, he’s convinced the accused are innocent. He reckons the culprits are more likely linked to the rise of a gang of masked vigilantes and the arrival of a notorious gunman. Jonathan Davis’ magnificent narration of Texas Standoff captures Kelton’s trademark grit and authenticity and provides a compelling tribute to the legendary Texan’s last tale.

Exactly what I thought old west must've been.

Great character development. Can't wait to listen to another of Kelton's books. My dad always said they were great.

Good story

Great story with good background characters. The setting was well done and the plot line was not the same old western. Good book start to finish!

Stories or philosophy

Been reading about Hermes and ancient Egypt and Greece . 🤗 This is a refreshing - and sometimes sad - yarn of the old west and the lives of a small number of those brave souls.

Long and rather boreing

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The story was good and interesting, but the narrator although doing a good job, was rather boreing...I enjoyed it toward the end when it picked up a bit..But it was a slow read
