Publisher's summary

August Shroeder, a burned-out teacher, has been sober since his 19-year-old son died. Every year he’s spent the summer on the road, but making it to Yellowstone this year means everything. The plan had been to travel there with his son, but now August is making the trip with Philip’s ashes instead. An unexpected twist of fate lands August with two extra passengers for his journey, two half-orphans with nowhere else to go.

What none of them could have known was how transformative both the trip - and the bonds that develop between them- would prove, driving each to create a new destiny together.

A Lasting Influence From One Meaningful Summer

In this story, a grieving, depressed history teacher reluctantly takes two young brothers on a trip through the western United States to visit national forests - a trip he had planned to take with his son. The boys, who are being raised by an alcoholic father, have never traveled beyond their home town and have never known a man of such good moral character. The knowledgeable and patient teacher broadens the horizons of the brothers and becomes a role model for the type of men they will become. Once the trip is over, the boys and man plan to stay in touch but circumstances and the boys' father interfere. I urge you to read the book to find out how they reunite and continue to play an important part in one another's lives. The story was memorable and held my interest from start to finish. The narrator was excellent.

Good premise

Good ideas they kept me going till the end, but the writing was more like a young adult book. The writing seems not quite developed.

A Sweet Story. . . Perhaps Too Sweet

This book turned out to be quite different than my usual fare (historical fiction, literary fiction, mysteries). . . I didn't really know what it was going to be and admittedly, struggled to stay with it in the beginning. In the end, it was a sweet story about kids and adults who are dependent on others to love them, protect them, challenge them. The story itself didn't have a big plot or lots of action, twists and turns. Instead, it follows an alcoholic science teacher who has lost a son as he develops a relationship with two boys whose father is an alcoholic. The writing was less than excellent, the plot predictable, but still I listened, just to find out what happened in the end. Perhaps that makes it a good one.

This is a slow, thoughtful story with many sweet moments in an otherwise somewhat sad tale.

Refreshing read

Nice to read a story without romance and sex. Just real people and their lives. Highs and lows of dealing with real life and it's problems

Road Trip!

Nothing like packing 3 souls into an R.V. for the summer to see what shakes out. With much trepidation, they not only explore and learn to cherish our National parks, but their journey leads them to do the same with their newly formed relationships. A poignant read and a much needed breather as a summer read.

Enjoyable Story

This was an enjoyable story and interesting enough that I wanted to put it on each evening at bedtime and whenever I was in the car. Jeff Cummings was adequate as a narrator, good pacing and clear diction. His character voices, particularly Henry, grated on me. But I do appreciate that each character had his own voice and they were consistent throughout.
