Publisher's summary

"We're about to cross the point of no return. God help us; we're flying in the dark, and we don't know where the hell we're going."

Facing down an unprecedented malevolent enemy, the government responds with a nuclear attack. America as it was is gone forever, and now every citizen - from the president of the United States to the homeless on the streets of New York City - will fight for survival.

Swan Song is Robert McCammon's prescient and shocking vision of a post-apocalyptic nation, a grand epic of terror and, ultimately, renewal.

In a wasteland born of rage and fear, populated by monstrous creatures and marauding armies, earth's last survivors have been drawn into the final battle between good and evil, that will decide the fate of humanity. They include Sister, who discovers a strange and transformative glass artifact in the destroyed Manhattan streets... Joshua Hutchins, the pro wrestler who takes refuge from the nuclear fallout at a Nebraska gas station... and Swan, a young girl possessing special powers, who travels alongside Josh to a Missouri town where healing and recovery can begin with Swan's gifts. But the ancient force behind earth's devastation is scouring the walking wounded for recruits for its relentless army, beginning with Swan herself.

Good book

It's was a good book overall. The narrator did a great job I thought. There were just a couple things in the book that never had a conclusion. Or events happen for no reason involved in the book. Still worth the read.

Fun, all the way through.

I love apocolyptic novels. I read that people compare this to Stephen King's The Stand, and it definately has you reminded of that novel as you listen. But it doesn't measure up. I really enjoyed this book. It always kept moving, that's important in this genre. The charactors could have been a little better developed. I wish I felt more connected to them. The plot itself definately took pressidence over character development. I would recomend this to anyone who likes these kind of books as I do, but don't go into it with any preconceived ideas that it should measure up to The Stand or to Justin Cronin's The Passage. If you do, you will be disappointed. It's very hard when you read these kinds of book to not have expectations or to compare. Especially after reading ones as good as those I mention above. I read/listen to a different kind of novel in between. Try it

As great as reading the book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, the story keeps you enthralled and the narrator does not just drone on as some do.

Who was the most memorable character of Swan Song and why?

Sister - all she had to do was detox and she became a strong leader.

Any additional comments?

I have gone through two unabridged paperbacks of the Swan Song and have always enjoyed rereading it. Now I get to listen to it while I do other things in the house or on the road. My husband normally does not like this kind of story (he's never read the book either), but he asks me to turn it on in the evenings. Much more entertaining than watching television.

A Great Journey

Would you listen to Swan Song again? Why?

Swan Song is one of my top 10 favorite books. I've actually read it several times. However, the last time I read it was at least a decade ago. So, when I listened to the book it was almost like reading it for the first time all over again! I'll definitely be listening to this book again.

What other book might you compare Swan Song to and why?

Swan Song has often been compared to The Stand by Stephen King. Both books do have 1 thing in common, they are both about the end of the world. Personally, I think that's where the similarities end.

What about Tom Stechschulte’s performance did you like?

Tom Stechschulte has a wonderful rhythm. His narration is mesmerizing. He brought a different dimension to this book. I enjoyed his narration so much, I will be looking for other books that he's narrated.

Who was the most memorable character of Swan Song and why?

There are a lot of memorable characters, but my favorite is Sister. She's a character that one should strive to emulate.

INCREDIBLE WRITING!!

Once again Robert McCammon delivers a story that grabs you from the beginning and doesn't release you until the very end! McCammon became one of my favorite writers after The Mathew Corbit series and Boys Life. This story of apocalyptic events did not sound like my kind of listen, however, after so many great reviews and FB praises for this book, I decided to give it a try and I'm so glad I did! This books storyline and superb writing weave a fabulous tale! This listen will keep you up at night wanting more! Well worth the credit!

Wow!

What a story! I love post-apocalyptic books and this one took the cake. Spooky story line, graphic details, and in-depth characters you found yourself rooting for until the very end.
