"A beautiful story filled with humor, gritty reality, subtle truths, warm-hearted prose, and touching characters." (Romantic Times)
"Warm, believable, and often - particularly in scenes set at Disney World - hilarious." (Booklist)
This book bridges a variety of genres. It is listed on audible as Fiction with a subset of Contemporary and the publisher summary leans towards Religious Inspirational. To me, the book is about faith--not necessarily "church" faith as the author states but really "street faith"--boots on the ground--living your life open to possibilities kind of faith. To me, it didn't proselytize denominational religion. The focus was instead on self acceptance, trust, taking responsibility for choices and allowing growth in life.
The writing was excellent. It told stories with each chapter that painted fully developed word pictures. It showed rather than told the story. Engaging, thoughtful, disturbing, filled with subtle and not so subtle insight and often was laugh out loud funny. Slowly as you listen a beautiful image of a family, a neighborhood and a community takes shape. To me, this wasn't a Mr Mom story. The characters were not perfect, but Cramer developed them into multidimensional, complex, believable people who were easy to care about.
At first I didn't like the narration. All the iron worker job site focus at the beginning in the raspy rough voice almost made me stop the book. Little by little I changed my opinion and ended up really appreciating Sala's voicing of the book. In the end I thought it added to the story being told.
I really enjoyed this positive, well written, off beat story. Glad I stuck with it.
Another really wonderful book by W. Dale Cramer. Calling it a Mister Mom type of book is really not accurate. It has a lot more layers and depth to it than that, but is also a thoroughly enjoyable read. And this is the best work to date that I have heard from Ed Sala, the narrator. He really takes you into the center of the story, and you hate to leave this family when the book is done.
This is easily one of our all-time favorite audio books! The story is delightful. Dale Cramer's sense of humor is the best. Somehow he manages to show the differences in a woman's opinion vs. a man's ... without making it look like husband bashing! Ed Sala's narration couldn't have been better. He is perfect for this story. We wish there was a sequel! We highly recommend this book and will definitely listen to it again.
This is one of my favorite books from my nearly nine years as an audible member. I love Nick Brannigan. This story takes some hilarious turns and pulls you in. The narrator is great, and you'll love it. I highly recommend it.
A most enjoyable read. The characters come to life and speak to all ages. The book had me smiling all the way. The message is simple and true.
This story reaches out to you on so many levels. It has so many stories within the story. It makes me laugh so much at the little daily things of life. And really provokes thought on a much deeper level on our humanity. So well written and perfect narration. One of my favorite stories!
