“The plot twists ingeniously...an engaging, often chilling book.” - The New York Times Book Review

A writer in California. A doctor in Boston. A motel owner and his employee in Nevada. A priest in Chicago. A robber in New York. A little girl in Las Vegas. They’re a handful of people from across the country, living through eerie variations of the same nightmare.

A dark memory is calling out to them. And soon they will be drawn together, deep in the heart of a sprawling desert, where the terrifying truth awaits...

Vintage Koontz

I took a month off from work and productivity when I got out of the Navy in 1994. A friend gave me a stack of Koontz books to keep me occupied and I blew through about five, establishing him as my favorite author of the macabre. His recent books are well written but his best work was in the 80s in my opinion. After many many moons of sleeping on this book while it loomed in plain sight, I cannot recommend it enough. This is the old Koontz, a story of great characters, epic story and a whirlwind of an emotional roller coaster. The story starts slow but once rolling you are taken for an awesome ride. Stick with it, and enjoy. Highly recommended.

Too long but very good narrator

Story could have been told in about half of the words. Ending was disappointing after all the build up ended in missed opportunities.

Long but enjoyable.

Slow going at the beginning as author sets up all the characters. However I found it interesting overall. If you enjoy Dean Koontz books than I believe you should enjoy this one as well. Very long listen but definitely worth one credit. Looking forward to his next one.,

Found narrator easy to follow and did a pretty good job of most voices.

Always loved the book

Read this when I was a teenager and delighted to rediscover it again. i enjoyed the charachters discovering their mysterious past and discovery of their relationship to one another as Koontz can weave a story like nobodys business.

it took a while for me to get usrd to the narrator, but grew to like him as his broad accent makes everyone seem like they are New Yorkers. it waa pretty fun as he nails the Jewish accent too. listening to him became a more fun experience as he tries to be delicate for female charachters but nails the older priest excellently. I adore him for taking on the challenge of this very wordy book! 😊

How did I miss this when it was First published?

This story is surprisingly contemporary, given the original publication date. The story is very much entertaining, with a subtle “stretching” exercise, causing one to wonder “what if?”

I always enjoy works written by Dean Kunz, as well as those narrated by Dick Hill, but this was exceptionally well put together. Bravo Gentlemen!

Great characters

Another great Koontz story. As usual he does a great job developing a great group of very different characters. This was a very long book, which was not a bad thing because the story was very enjoyable. The narrator was a little weak. I've heard him read a different book where he only had to narrate a story and he was fine. The problem here was his "voices". A lot of the characters sounded the same and he was especially weak on female voices. I don't feel he took too much away from a great story.
