Publisher's Summary

A power kept secret for 2000 years. A woman who stands to lose everything.

India. When a nun is burned alive on the sacred ghats of Varanasi, and the stone she carried is stolen, an international hunt is triggered for the relics of the early church. Forged in the fire and blood of martyrs, the Pentecost stones have been handed down through generations of Keepers who kept their power and locations secret.

Until now.

The Keepers are being murdered, the stones stolen by those who would use them for evil in a world transformed by religious fundamentalism. Oxford University psychologist Morgan Sierra is forced into the search when her sister and niece are held hostage. She is helped by Jake Timber from the mysterious ARKANE, a British government agency specializing in paranormal and religious experience. Morgan must risk her own life to save her family, but will she ultimately be betrayed?

From ancient Christian sites in Spain, Italy and Israel to the far reaches of Iran and Tunisia, Morgan and Jake must track down the stones through the myths of the early church in a race against time before a new Pentecost is summoned, this time powered by the fires of evil.

The first in the ARKANE series, Pentecost is a fast-paced thriller that explores the edges of faith against a backdrop of early Christian history, archaeology and psychology.

    "Nice Surprise"

Nice surprise...the cover caught my eye, and the description intrigued me. I found it very enjoyable and at the end was looking for the next installment. With both the characters and the situations being well written with the details you need to be absorbed into the story.

"I love a good thriller and this one is AWESOME!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have been anxiously waiting for this book to become available as an audiobook and I was not disappointed. I encourage friends, family, or anyone who likes thrillers to listen to this audiobook. JF Penn writes an explosive thriller that keeps you listening to the very last minute. With rich action and conspiracy concepts in this book make it one to rival Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. The character of Morgan is dynamic, relatable, and real—I can’t wait to read more about her adventures with Arkane. I liked the way the book was written, jumping around from one character to the next, it gave the feeling of a movie, and it wasn’t hard to see the action playing out in my head.

What other book might you compare Pentecost to and why?

It reminded me a lot of the Da Vinci Code because it is fasted paced and about religious conspiracies. The main character Morgan reminded me a lot of Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series.

What about Veronica Giguere’s performance did you like?

Veronica Giguere, did an excellent job performing all the different rolls Penn had crafted. I think the narrator can make or break a great audiobook and Giguere did not disappoint.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It kept me on the edge of my seat.

    Any additional comments?

I am an avid listener of audiobooks and this was put together pretty good. I can always tell I have had a good experience when I am waiting for more to follow after it has ended. When you don't want the experience to stop--you know you have a good book. Well done JF Penn!!

    "Loved it"

Had a great time listening to this. The story grabbed me and refused to let go until the end. I love it when an author let's us see their struggle with the spiritual rather than having it all be tightly wrapped in a neat little package.

"Guess this just isn't my cup of tea. Boring."

Narrator was good but story was boring with too many unnecessary details. Sometimes it reads more like a book report than a novel. The story stretches suspension of disbelief to the limit. Like I said, this probably just isn't my kind of book.

    "Dissapointing and predictable. "

This is like a Dan Brown novel without the thought. It is a predictable story that always has convenient ways for the characters to get what they want. I listened to the last 2 hours on 3x speed just to get through it.

It was a very exciting book to listen to. I would have preferred a different voice reading it, but the narrator did a very good job.

    "Not entirely realistic, but fun"
What did you love best about Pentecost?

The suspense increases dramatically in the last two chapters. Morgan Sierra is an interesting character, as is Everett

What about Veronica Giguere’s performance did you like?

The narration on the audio book is very good, my only complaint on that score being that it's by an American, and so she uses American pronunciation for words like "shone" and "route", rather than the British. That's a minor complaint, though.

    Any additional comments?

The time frame means that events happen too quickly to be realistic, but it keeps the reader interested.

    "Action packed ride"
What was one of the most memorable moments of Pentecost?

The opening scene with the nun definitely had me hooked and sickened so loved it.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

What I didn't like about this recording was that the pauses between chapters was too long. Dead air is not good especially when listening to a thriller. I also wasn't keen on Jake's voice.

    Any additional comments?

Morgan is a great character. This is a fast paced thriller with some sickening moments that propel you into the action. My only feedback would be to slow the story down a bit and add even more suspense. The reader is jettisoned from scene to scene and country to country without much insight into places, feelings or personal insights - I wanted to know more. I really enjoyed the story and characters and look forward to reading book 2.

"The worst narration I have ever heard."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If the narrator had read, read and reread the book. Then. Read the book.

What will your next listen be?

    Anything not by this narrator.

Would you be willing to try another one of Veronica Giguere’s performances?

Under extreme duress, torture or possible threat of death... maybe...

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    All three.

    Any additional comments?

    Inapropriate accent/ emphasis and cadence.
    No rythem/ metre or pace.
I want a refund so I can buy the hardcopy... :-)

    Please.

"A fascinating read and great story."
If you could sum up Pentecost in three words, what would they be?

    A gripping read.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Morgan. a well rounded character that you connect with and root for throughout the story.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The Church of Santiago de Compostela. mysterious and at times humorous, really enjoyed listening to this section.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

The Story gripped me from the start and after an hour I was almost in the action myself, rooting for the protagonist. Wonderful settings and full of intrigue and religious mystery. I would highly recommend to anyone even slightly interested in supernatural thrillers and even to those who aren’t into supernatural thrillers, this is a great read to pull someone into the genre. The fast paced and constant need to find out what happens next made sure I listened to it all in almost one sitting.
The narrator does a good job of keeping the reader deep inside the story-line from start to finish and conveys the different characters with skill. Looking forward to listening to the next one in the series.
