Editorial reviews

The heart-wrenching tale of 50-year-old Alice Howland and her early onset Alzheimer's diagnosis is narrated eloquently by author Lisa Genova. Alice, a successful linguistics professor at Harvard, is married to John, an equally esteemed Harvard professor, and together they have three grown children. Her biggest worry in life is her youngest daughter's move to L.A. to pursue acting until Alice starts forgetting things. It begins innocuously enough: misplacing her BlackBerry, missing unimportant appointments on her to-do list, searching her mind for tip-of-the-tongue phrases. But when she goes on her familiar daily run through Cambridge, and becomes disoriented just one mile from home, Alice knows something is terribly wrong.

A battery of tests and multiple doctor visits later, her worst nightmare is confirmed she is in the first stages of early onset Alzheimer's disease. Told from Alice's perspective, it's a frighteningly keen insight to the slow deterioration of a debilitating disease. Every nuance of pain, frustration, fear, and sorrow is captured in Genova's voice and she expertly utilizes the pregnant pause, and short, choppy sentences to convey the confusion and pain of Howland's thoughts during testing and diagnosis.

Genova's slight Boston accent lends authenticity to the story, and she doesn't oversell the emotion behind the words. Her transitions between character dialogue are smooth and subtle, but she so embodies the main character Alice, it's hard to remember that it is Genova, and not Howland herself, telling her story. Knowing its being read exactly as it was intended by the author creates an even stronger connection to the work. Equally present is the devastating effect this illness has on Alice's husband, children, and coworkers. And while there's obviously no happy ending in sight, Genova still manages to paint a story of hope, reminding listeners that even in the midst of great loss and suffering, love remains. Publisher's summary

What if every memory you've ever had will be erased from your mind, and you have no choice but to carry on...powerless to stop it?

Alice Howland is proud of the life she worked so hard to build. At 50 years old, she's a cognitive psychology professor at Harvard and a world-renowned expert in linguistics with a successful husband and three grown children. When she begins to grow disoriented and forgetful, a tragic diagnosis changes her life - and her relationship with her family and the world - forever.

At once beautiful and terrifying, this extraordinary debut novel by Lisa Genova is a moving and vivid depiction of life with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease that is as compelling as A Beautiful Mind and as unforgettable as Ordinary People.

You got it right

At my age (70) the story was frightening, heartwarming , and heartbreaking. I kept thinking of the many times that I, and my friends , can't recall places or names. Is this normal aging or?? Sometimes Lisa's intonation seemed cold and took away from the story. But I could feel Alice's fright, her loneliness and her confusion. "Did I get it right
?."

perfectly heartbreaking

Still Alice truly captures the emotional picture of an Alzheimer's patient as she loses concrete memory. It took me awhile to get into the narration, but as the story progressed I got caught up. Loved it!

Worth the time

The narrator initially sounded monotone. It that improved. There were other points where narrative went monotone. Perhaps it was to reflect how the character was viewing life at that moment. The rest of the story was engaging.

The story overall was on point and hopefully will help to educate families and the public about this timely topic.

Great Read!

If you could sum up Still Alice in three words, what would they be?

Factual, Heartbreaking, Empathetic

What did you like best about this story?

I'm a neuroscientist, so I liked the fact that it was written by another neuroscientist and was factual to what we know the disease to be. I also liked that it gave me a better perspective of what Alzheimer's looks like from the patient's end, while also helping to explain the disease and its current treatments to a reader that may not know much about it.

What didn’t you like about Lisa Genova’s performance?

I'm slightly misophonic, and the recording included a lot of smacking noises, so I couldn't stand to listen to it in earbuds.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I think I would have preferred it as a hardcopy. It was a wonderful book, but I could only handle the performance for so long each day. If I were reading it myself, I could've easily finished it in one sitting.

I thought it was base in a true story

I sow the movie but I want to read Alice problems deep inside. The book was not base in a true story. It was well done research about people with this kind of problems.

Most impactful book since the Help

Would you listen to Still Alice again? Why?

I definitely will listen to it again. Listened once, saw the movie, now will listen again.

What other book might you compare Still Alice to and why?

The Help effected me int he same way. Books that make you think and understand mankind and the reality of others.

What about Lisa Genova’s performance did you like?

It was OK. I think a professional would've done better but she surely would know better than anyone how she wanted the story told. Bravo to her to write such a masterpiece and have the confidence to perform it.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, when Lisa wrote herself instructions for the end. I definitely saw myself in that moment and saw my Dad then as well. Both my parents has tried to plan to take their lives due to cancer and alzheimers ....neither was well enough to do it.

Any additional comments?

The book is much better than the movie and I really enjoyed everyone about it. I guess if we could've know Lisa just a little better int he beginning of the book and a little more character development on the daughters.
