Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Catherine Anderson whisks listeners away to Oregon for a suspense-filled romance. Faking her own death to escape her murderous husband, Rainie takes refuge in the rural community of Crystal Falls, where she finds work as a bookkeeper on a horse ranch run by Parker Harrigan. But as their initial attraction blossoms, Rainie fears she can't continue to elude the man who has sworn to kill her - and that her mere presence could jeopardize everything the Harrigan family holds dear.

Interesing premise, didn't like the narrator.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A better narrator would certainly have added a bit more liveliness.

Would you be willing to try another book from Catherine Anderson? Why or why not?

No. The story was original on the one hand, but everything was so spelled out. And sometimes a bit repetitious what with the reasoning behind the heroine's actions.

Would you be willing to try another one of Julia Gibson’s performances?

No, I didn't enjoy her performance at all. The only difference between characer voices was the higher and deeper voice. One male had an accent, but other than that all the females sounded alike and so did all the males.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Like I wrote, the premise was a good one - but it deserved better from both author and narrator.

A Keeper

The story had a good plot, and I never lost interest, what a shame, but thing's like that really happen, some women don't stand up, but Ranie is one who did....I will listen to this again...

Inspirational romance rather than suspense

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

It reads like an inspirational romance rather than romantic suspense, with the most un-Alpha hero I have ever encountered. I don't have a problem with him saying grace before meals, but the message is rather pushed. And he goes to ask his father if it's OK to have feelings for a woman he suspects is married. Come on!

What was most disappointing about Catherine Anderson’s story?

It just didn't go anywhere. There is no 'action', where is the suspense? At least, not as far as I've listened - about a third of the way through, and I can't bear to listen to any more to find out if it improves, I'm afraid.
Also, I don't find the characters sympathetic - I don't really care whether they get together in the end or not. They are cardboard cutouts, there is no real depth to them

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She makes Rainie - and the other female characters I've encountered - sound quite 'whiny', giving them sugary sweet voices that grates on me. Also, her pronounciation of some words, is frankly bizarre, as if she'd never encountered them before and is making up what she thinks they should sound like. The emphasis is on the wrong part of the word.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not for me, I'm afraid

Any additional comments?

I'ts the first and last Catherine Anderson I'll be listening to. I really dislike this book and it's put me off trying others. Also, I'll listen more carefully to the samples from now on to see whether I can stand the narrator's voice.

disappointing

After reading "Comanche Moon" I found this book sadly lacking in both the author's ability to keep my interest (the canine antics were the only parts of value for me) and the reader's ability to change tonal quality at the end of each sentence. Maybe it was only an off day for this listener...

good light and fun

You know what you will get if you read the review. Not much else, but the writing and people are enough to keep your interest, and you can clean drive and work through it. I liked the narration Very well.

Very good novel

This author is new to me but I definitely want to buy more of her novels. I enjoyed all the characters, story development and suspense.

Another good one

I like the way family is woven into all these stories. The thread is the same but a different pattern. Will go back snd find the one I missed just to fill in all the blanks.

GEEZ!

This book started good...Then it was 14+ hours. of whining. By the end I didn't care if the ex killed her. By chapter !7 I wanted to do a body switch & stomp that sorry excuse of a man the h married to dust. This book was torture. The H was clueless at times but the h never did anything to help herself. She almost helped in her own murder. There were several missed opportunities to end this farce. Domestic violence is sickening & this book did nothing to bolster victims. The movie Sleeping with the Enemy was mentioned, I hoped to experience the movie Enough but It never really happened. The narrator wasn't that bad, she just didn't have much to work with. At first I thought I might listen to other books from this series but I can't do it.

Interesting Story and characters

Narration was not the best. Raney's voice was too breathless (think Marilyn Monroe) even when she was horrified because she kicked Parker so hard he fell to his knees. She often sounded like a child not a strong grown woman.
