Publisher's summary

Raised in the steamy bayous of New Orleans in the early 1900s, LeRoi "King" Tremain, caught up in his family's ongoing feud with the rival DuMont family, learns to fight. Very intriguing!

Standing at the scratch line kept me wanting more! I am looking forward to listening to this again. I was saddened just a little that it had to end. The reason it was just a little is because my son told me about Echoes of a Distant Summer, so now I’m listening to that one very excited I want to hear more thank you!

Great book!!!

Read this book about 5 years ago, and decided to give it another read. Even better the second time! The audio helped me get through it quicker too!

One of the Best Books

This is one of my favorite books. It tells a whole and complete story. There is something for everyone. I have read the book and listen to the audio, both excellent.

EB

An excellent story of Black resistance, resilience and redemption that's rooted in reality.

A side of history that's hardly ever talked about, written about or ever put on the big screen.

LOVED IT

Great book- great storyline

This book was meticulously crafted and presented, and its sequel, while still enjoyable, didn't quite capture the same level of engagement as the first. Nevertheless, both books are certainly worth reading!

Best Ever

What made the experience of listening to Standing at the Scratch Line the most enjoyable?

Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. the story and the presentation were captivating.

What did you like best about this story?

It was page turning fiction with great historical insight into some aspects of Black life in the first half of the 20th century including life in the deep South, role of the Black soldier in WW1, Harlem, and the all-Black towns of the Midwest.

What does Dion Graham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Language of the time and region.

If you could rename Standing at the Scratch Line, what would you call it?

The name belies what the book was about but I can't think of a better name.

Loved it!!!! DION GRAHAM was excellent as always!!

If you could sum up Standing at the Scratch Line in three words, what would they be?

Intricate REAL Amazing!!!!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Standing at the Scratch Line?

Too many to mention!! Guy Johnson's writing and Dion Graham's narration took me on an incredible journey!! After 25 hours I STILL wanted more!!!!!

Which character – as performed by Dion Graham – was your favorite?

As my all-time favorite narrator, Dion was absolutely BRILLIANT performing them all but if I had to pick one, it would have to be King!!!

Any additional comments?

I absolutely loved this book as, although fictional, it took you through an amazing journey through the reality of the lives of many African Americans during WWI and families in a way we don't often glimpse during this period in history. It was incredibly suspenseful as you could never guess what would happen or where the story would lead next. Dion Graham was the PERFECT narrator as I believe he really brought the characters to life in a way that NO ONE else could. BRAVO!!!!!!
