Publisher's summary

In Spring Fever, the New York Times bestselling author Mary Kay Andrews delivers her delicious new escapist novel about small towns, old flames, and deep secrets

Annajane Hudgens truly believes she is over her ex-husband, Mason Bayless. They've been divorced for four years, she's engaged to a terrific new guy, and she's ready to leave the small town where she and Mason had so much history. She is so over Mason that she has absolutely no problem attending his wedding to the beautiful, intelligent, delightful Celia. But when fate intervenes and the wedding is called to a halt as the bride is literally walking down the aisle, Annajane begins to realize that maybe she's been given a second chance. Maybe everything happens for a reason. And maybe, just maybe, she wants Mason back. But there are secrets afoot in this small Southern town. On the peaceful surface of Hideaway Lake, Annajane discovers that the past is never really gone. Even if there are people determined to keep Annajane from getting what she wants, happiness might be hers for the taking, and the life she once had with Mason in this sleepy lake town might be in her future.

Critic reviews

“Kathleen McInerney perfectly presents this cheerful, funny story about second chances and true love. It's a story full of Southern charm and witty dialogue, and McInerney's Southern accents are well done. Her fake ‘sweet' voice for the villainous Ceila is enough to make one's teeth hurt, and everyone would love to have a best friend like Mason's determined sister, Pokey. A superior listen leaves one smiling.” —AudioFile Magazine

“Narrator Kathleen McInerney does the book proud, conferring subdued Southern accents on the Carolina natives and distinguishing between men and women with unobtrusive variations in key. She gives a pint-size, non-icky voice to a mystery child, Sophie, and a perky, uber-yummy Midwestern accent to the Nebraska-born manipulator, Celia. The book is a sparkler with just desserts and comeuppances dished all around.” —Newsday

“Kathleen McInerney's narration is clear, crisp, and appealing…The Southern accent she creates is effective in all its forms: soft and sweet or acerbic and cold. This entertaining, contemporary romance is perfect for light, summer listening.” —Publishers Weekly

Light and sweet

Any additional comments?

This is a story about rediscovering lost love and friendship.

AnnaJane and Mason used to be married, so when she finds herself at Mason's wedding, she starts thinking about what happened to end their marriage and how she still loves him--despite being engaged to another man, as well. The story is about Annajane and Mason, but also small town living, the south and friendship. Conflict comes at Annajane and Mason in the form of their fiancees, family members and the business that Mason's family owns and which employs all the locals.

Kathleen McInerney did a great job with the Southern accent and distinguishing between different characters.

It's not deep, but it's well told and good chick-lit.

Good story,but....

Was a good book. Could have been just as good with about a third of the length removed. There were a lot of underdeveloped characters and random scenes/ dialogues that would never have been missed if they weren’t added to begin with.

Spring Fever

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, the book was entertaining from beginning to end; Mary Kay caught my attention from the very start of the audio book. I listen to entire book on the way home and found myself parked outside my home not wanted to turn it off.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Pokey because of her wit and care free attitude, her determination to put Anna Jane and Mason back together.

What does Kathleen McInerney bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The way the book was read by Kathleen was sensational, really brought book to life; compared to if I would have read it. I was picturing every character placing myself there at the moment Kathleen opens her mouth, I was hooked and when it came to an end.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for something to happen, the book was funny, humorous, heart throbbing made you feel good.

Good summer read

While on the surface, this is a good summer read, it also has some unexpected plot twists that take it from mindless ready to sit up and be suprised reading. If you like Mary Kay Andrews other books set in the South, you'll most likely enjoy this one. However, as a NC resident, I am wondering where this mystical town is where it takes 6 hours to get to Atlanta on a clear, sunny day driving straight through with only a quick bathroom break but only 3 hours to get back from Atlanta through a snow and ice storm. There are some other editorial blips like this in the book but if you can get past them, you'll enjoy the read.

Enjoyable, no explicit sex, violence/foul language

I liked this book better than two of her other books I read recently--Deep Dish and Savannah Blues. The characters were well developed and the plot kept me interested. The love story was kind of predictable but still very enjoyable. I liked the characters, story and the ending. And I appreciated the lack of explicit sex, violence and foul language.
