Publisher's summary

The debut of a brand-new, action-packed series from the number-one New York Times best-selling master of "pure entertainment" ( People).

Thousands of years ago, the Persian king Xerxes the Great was said to have raided the Treasury at Delphi, carrying away two solid gold pillars as tribute. In 1800 Napoleon Bonaparte and his army stumble across the pillars in the Pennine Alps. Unable to transport them, Napoleon creates a map on the labels of 12 bottles of rare wine. And when Napoleon dies, the bottles disappear....

Treasure hunters Sam and Remi Fargo are exploring the Great Pocomoke Swamp in Delaware when they are shocked to discover a World War II German U-boat. Inside, they find a bottle taken from Napoleon's "lost cellar". Fascinated, the Fargos set out to find the rest of the collection.

But another connoisseur of sorts has been looking for the bottle they've just found. He is Hadeon Bondaruk - a half- Russian, half-Persian millionaire. He claims to be a descendant of King Xerxes himself. And he wants his treasure back.

Fun treasure hunting story

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would have liked to see more development with the Fargo's and how they got into treasure hunting. I think that would have made a better intro novel.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The historical aspects of the different cultures and how they tied in together. From Napolean, to the Greek Spartans and Persian empire, it was a neat concept for a story.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

Scott Brick did a really good job with the villans and the Fargo's. The other minor characters had unique voices, but there wasn't much outstanding to them. Brick's performances always exceed expectations, and this is no exception when it comes to the Fargos and all the antagonists, he really does well with their Eastern European accents.

Any additional comments?

It's a solid book and an easy listen. It kept me wanting to find out what happened next, and in true Cussler form, he loves describing his cars. It wasn't the best Cussler novel, but I think I will give another book in this series a go when I'm in a treasure hunting mood, since good treasure hunting novels are hard to find, espically with no crazy supernatural or completely fictional universes.

GOOD BUT NOT THE BEST

This is a good read but dragged down by the extensive explanation of the history behind it which does not connect very well. Unless you are a French history buff, you can easily get lost but the book does continually come back to the main story. Not sure the history is essential to the story-could be explained easier.

A great story...but long winded

This was my first exposure to Clive Cussler. At the beginning of the book it was captivating and intriguing. Half way through the book it was still captivating and intriguing. But I found that it got to a point where it became repetitive. I started to want the book to end.

That being said, I will try more Clive Cussler books because the imagination, attention to detail and history makes it worthwhile.

Cussler always weaves an entertaining tale!

Clive Cussler has a great knack for blending actual historical events and figures into a modern day tale. A good adventure is always entertaining to listen to audibly.

A little too cliche

I did enjoy this book, however, it was a little too 'cute' for me. It's nice having a married couple as the heroes, but not very believable.
