Publisher's summary

From Lauren Graham, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, comes a witty, charming, and hilariously relatable debut novel about a struggling young actress trying to get ahead - and keep it together - in New York City.

It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing "important" work. But all she has to show for her efforts so far is a part in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters, and a gig waiting tables at a comedy club. Her roommates - her best friend, Jane; and Dan, an aspiring sci-fi writer - are supportive, yet Franny knows a two-person fan club doesn’t exactly count as success. Everyone tells her she needs a backup plan, and though she can almost picture moving back home and settling down with her perfectly nice ex-boyfriend, she’s not ready to give up on her goal of having a career like her idols, Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep. Not just yet.

But while she dreams of filling their shoes, in the meantime, she’d happily settle for a speaking part in almost anything - and finding a hair product combination that works.

Everything is riding on the upcoming showcase for her acting class, where she’ll finally have a chance to perform for people who could actually hire her. And she can’t let herself be distracted by James Franklin, a notorious flirt and the most successful actor in her class, even though he’s suddenly started paying attention. Meanwhile, her bank account is rapidly dwindling, her father wants her to come home, and her agent doesn’t return her calls. But for some reason, she keeps believing that she just might get what she came for.

Someday, Someday, Maybe is a story about hopes and dreams, being young in a city, and wanting something deeply, madly, desperately. It’s about finding love, finding yourself, and perhaps most difficult of all in New York City, finding an acting job.

I hope there is a sequel

As a diehard Gilmore Girls fan, I really enjoyed Lauren Graham's first novel.
I hope there is a sequel or that she writes another book - enjoyed her narration too.

Graham's got talent

Lauren Graham's performance of the material is stellar, no big surprise there. A talented actor to be sure but I'll be truthful here, I went into this book thinking, "well, even if the story isn't great her performance will be entertaining while I sit in rush hour traffic." I underestimated this book. Great story, great performance telling the story...the first time I enjoyed sitting in traffic AND didn't honk my horn. That's progress. While the story is about a struggling actor, it will appeal to anyone who is struggling or has struggled to build their career in those early years. I have never had acting aspirations but connected with this book. I've heard that Graham was thinking of a sequel...Frannie's first job in LA. Hoping that's true, it would be a great "next phase"sort of story. Graham is a true talent.

Fun!

It's almost like having Gilmore Girls' Lorelai read you a story. Personally liked it better after changing the speed to 1.25. I giggled and laughed embarrassingly on the train while listening!

Cute story

It's always a pleasure to hear Lauren Graham's voice. Cute story that has a unique perspective not generally found in novels.

Love her, not the story though

I love Lauren Graham and loved her narration. I wish she'd narrate more books. But the story was silly. If I was an actress, maybe I'd relate a little more. And if it was a movie, maybe it would have been cute. But this was just ehhh to me.

Who doesn't love Lauren Graham?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Is it a perfect work of literary art? No, but nothing ever is, and it's hard not to be charmed by the author and her engaging style. It kept me entertained during my long LA commute, and I found myself listening to it outside of the car, because I couldn't wait to hear the rest of the story. My only complaint is that it went by too fast and left me wanting more. (Lauren, I hope you're writing a sequel - we need to see what comes next for Franny!)
