Publisher's summary

Here is the story of two families, branches of the Solomons, transported to an alien land. Both branches eventually grow rich and powerful. But through three generations, the families never, for one moment, relinquish their hatred for each other. This novel is also the story of Australia, from its beginnings to its coming of age as a nation.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Humphrey Bower doesn't miss a nuance. His villains have a sharp, nasal nastiness, and his love scenes tickle the hairs at the nape of the neck. Bower's performance is spot-on." (Audiofile)

A Good End To A Great Trilogy

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed these three books, and was sorry for the trilogy to come to an end. Bryce Courtenay is one my favourite authors of all time, and I have read many of his books. This trilogy was probably my favourite story.

Australia history Great Gallipoli section!

Would you listen to Solomon's Song again? Why?

I just finished the three books in the Australia Triology, for a second listen. The characters are great. At times great, other times a little melocholy.I love Humphrey Bower's narration.

What did you like best about this story?

My most insightful is part is the Gippoli section.

Have you listened to any of Humphrey Bower’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to more than a dozend Humphrey Bower narrations. This one is equal to his best.
I think my favorite Humphry Bower narration is a section of Shantaram, the section with Provaka.

Who was the most memorable character of Solomon's Song and why?

Hawk is my favorite.

Any additional comments?

I recommend you listen in order, The Potato Factory, Tommo and Hawk, and Solomon's Song. But one could read this one alone. My other favorite author about Australia is Nevel Shute. A Town like Alice is great.

Fantastic writer but...

I love this writer and I always enjoy his stories. However I am a sucker for a happy ending and I am often left disappointed with this particular Arthur

Listened to trilogy from beginning to end WOW

What made the experience of listening to Solomon's Song the most enjoyable?

Bryce Courtenay is brilliant. The Narration is engaging and the characters come to life as if in a movie. A must read. I am sure I will listen to all his work many times over.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Each character is developed and then redeveloped as the years pass between the pages. How can you not respect, hate or fall in love with these imaginative beings you feel you know as friends.

What does Humphrey Bower bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Humphrey Bower is an actor first, a orator second. I can not imagine listening to these books without his reading brilliance.

Great writer, Great storyteller.

Bryce Courtney is a great storyteller and entertaining writer. His books could be up there with some of the "Greats" but he gets down into the details of the social gutter too much at times to appeal to a wider audience. A little more discretion on the social/human dark side would allow me to recommend this to a lot more people.

Tommo and Hawk

What a story! Due to the previous reviews and the synopsis I won’t go into what this was about; instead I wanted to add my views of how much I like Bryce Courtney and the narrator Humphrey Bower. What a combination. Mr. Bower is a master of acting – in narration – and if he ever becomes a huge video star his talents would be missed. Mr. Courtney is a master story teller of things I know/knew little of. In his preface he notes that the surroundings and personalities were accurate; with that in mind and having little else to go on, he painted quite an existence. As with most history, women are constantly victims and those who choose not to be, are very interesting people indeed. Get the series – each book could stand on their own but one without the other would miss a lot. I will listen to the series again.
