Publisher's summary

E.R. nurse Ella Majors has seen all the misery that she can handle. Burned-out and unsure of her next step, she accepts the temporary position as caregiver to Marion Henderson, a frightened five-year-old who suffers from juvenile diabetes. But Ella soon realizes there is more sorrow in the isolated home than the little girl’s illness can account for. Harris Henderson, a single father, seems better able to deal with the wild birds he rehabilitates in his birds-of-prey sanctuary than with his own daughter.

Then something magical begins to happen: the timeless beauty of the South Carolina coast and the majestic grace of the wild birds weave a healing spell on the injured hearts at the sanctuary. But a troubled mother’s unexpected return will test the fragile bonds of trust and new love, and reveal the inherent risks and exhilarating beauty of flying free.

Slow at first

The story started out slower than most of this authors books. I started it then stopped because I didn’t like the voices being used. I started it again when my other book finished while I was hiking and I needed something else to listen to. The characters are well developed and I’m glad I gave this book another shot. The worst part about the story is the voices for the characters. The adults aren’t too bad but the little girls voice is loud, whiny and scratchy. It disrupts the motion of the story as it is read. If you like Ms Monroe’s other books, this is very different but still involves the South Carolina environment she loves to write about.

Educational and interesting

I really wanted to give this 4 plus stars, maybe not 5, as I reserve five for books that I really feel are special and tell everybody I see that they have to read it also. It is definetly worth the credit. It takes place at a bird of prey clinic, each chapter imparts factual information about the raptors. I also learned more about diabetes. The characters were strong and the narrator did a good job of depicting each one. It started just a little slow as I was coming down off a really riveting, intense listen. Thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend.

Great story

Loved the book! Grew up in Charleston and love reading stories that tell of the low country. I am also a nurse so could really relate.

interesting: Birds & low country

The story was great in the facts about birds, the rest of the story was a bit slow... a potentially great story with a little tighter edit.
