Editorial reviews

Charles "Chaz" Perrone is a real scumbag, but he's the love of Joey Perrone's life. That is, until he dumps her over the side of a cruise ship. But, due to her history as a swimming champ, her lucky find of a bale of Jamaican pot and a rescue by ex-cop Mick Stranahan, she lives to take out her revenge on the poor slob.

Set in south Florida and full of eccentric characters who come to life with Hiassen's vivid character sketches, Skinny Dip is laugh-out-loud funny. The narrator adds to the story with the excellent interpretation of the characters. Hard to put the headphones down with this one!

Publisher's summary

When Chaz Perron's wife discovers that he is running a scam (posing as a marine biologist to doctor water samples so that an agribusiness tycoon can continue illegally dumping fertilizer into the Everglades), he pushes her overboard from a cruise liner. Unlucky for Chaz, Joey survives clutching a bale of Jamaican pot. Rescued from the Atlantic by a former police officer, Mick Stranahan, she decides not to report him but instead haunt and taunt him, with Mick's help, by playing dead. As a result, Chaz becomes increasingly erratic and inept, a fact noticed by his ruthless and cold-blooded coworkers. Also, the six-time-married Mick rediscovers the thwarted romantic in him, believing that the seventh time might be the charm.

Critic reviews

"At this point in his career as a comic novelist, Carl Hiaasen did not need to get any better. He has long been writing smarty, fizzy Floridian escapades that amount to pure reading pleasure. But Skinny Dip, his latest, is something more: a screwball delight so full of bright, deft, beautifully honed humor that it places Mr. Hiaasen in the company of Preston Sturges, Woody Allen and S.J. Perelman....Mr. Hiaasen writes with finesse." (The New York Times)
"Hiaasen's signature mix of hilariously over-the-top villains, lovable innocents and righteous indignation at what mankind has done to his beloved Florida wilderness is all present in riotous abundance in his latest....Hiaasen's books are so enjoyable it's always a sad moment when they end." (Publishers Weekly)
"No reprobate escapes the satirical eye of Hiaasen, who writes like the love child of Hunter S. Thompson and Evelyn Waugh....Like Hiaasen's nine previous novels, this one's a corker, chock-full of belly laughs and blistering truths." (Booklist)

Loved it!

I listen to Audible on my way to and from work every night, an hour long drive. This has to have been my favorite book so far! I laughed from the beginning pages til the end of the book. I really think this one is a must hear!

Great Easy Listen!

Funny, imaginative, interesting, not hard to follow, just good, plain light-hearted listening entertainment.
I will find more from this author, and hope his other works are the same.

Very Enjoyable

I enjoyed this book and looked forward to listening to it each time I had the opportunity. The resolution was a bit long-winded but I really have no complaints -- a very enjoyable book to listen to. Very Funny.

Clever and witty

What made the experience of listening to Skinny Dip the most enjoyable?

I love Carl Hiaasen. I know that whichever of his books I read (or listen) I am going to enjoy it. He just has a very funny, clever, and witty way of explaining serious issues such as homicides. I guess I'm also biased since I am from South Florida so I am familiar with all the places he mentions in his books. It's exciting to read/listen.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Skinny Dip?

One of the most memorable moments for me was the way Joey played mind games with Chaz. I think it's because that is something I see myself doing. And I won't say anything else so I don't ruin it for others.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Stephen Hoye?

I would. However, I really didn't like the way that he narrated the female dialogue through. For some reason, they all sounded like they had New York accents to me. He really made Chaz sound like a whiny and annoying guy. He made me hate the character which I guess means he did a great job.

If you could take any character from Skinny Dip out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would take Tool out for dinner not because of any sort of attraction but because he is the most interesting character in this book. He would have other things to talk about other than greed, lust, and power.

Any additional comments?

I do wish Hiaasen would have spent a little more time with the ending. I was kind of expecting more and was left hanging a little bit...unless there is a continuation which I will have to start looking for.

A little too racy for me

I enjoyed this book, but the sexual theme of the book got a little old by the end.

Good book, fine narration

Good read, must be since I've read it before. More-or-less a good, funny rom-com movie in book form.

What a delightful surprise!

Great story. Great characters. Awesome narrator. Narrator made the experience of listening to the book more than I expected. No way they could successfully cast this as a movie-again the narrator.

Fast pace fun book

There were no surprises but the dialogue was upbeat. A quick read with a deserving end.
