Sisterland

For identical twins, Kate and Violet are about as unlike as two peas from the same pod can be. Where does Sisterland rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Top 10

What other book might you compare Sisterland to, and why?

To Sittenfeld's previous books "American Wife" and "Prep" which I loved. This isn't quite as brilliant as the other two, but I really enjoyed it nevertheless. The ending felt a little contrived to me, but that's just a small niggle.

What about Laurence Bouvard’s performance did you like?

I thought it was spot on.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It's a quiet story, but very absorbing. The portrayal of the relationship between the two sisters is utterly convincing. There were a few moments which made me laugh out loud.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Didn't really know where this book would go, but from the start it sets out it's stall pretty well in the borderline magical arena, but it retains (very well) the core of the title, being about relationships and the ups and downs of family relationships. I was truly enchanted

What did you like best about this story?

The characters are well written and I really enjoyed the different perspectives, all believable (mostly) and easy to spend time with. A lot of the character interactions resonated strongly

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Would have been happy to listen all the way through, never lost interest

    "Awful."
    What disappointed you about Sisterland?

This is an extremely long shallow and boring story. The main character is total characterless pathetic woman . Not interesting at all.
I did struggle to read the book to its end, waiting for it to get better, but no such luck! Just total disappointment. The only good thing about it was the narrating of Laurence Bouvard.

Would you ever listen to anything by Curtis Sittenfeld again?

    No

What about Laurence Bouvard’s performance did you like?

    Very good performance. Very convincing

"Story had potential, ruined by awful characters"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I honestly cant think of anyone who would enjoy this book, it's a non story. Perhaps a teenage girl with little life-experience would enjoy it but I still wouldn't recommend this drivel to anyone.

What could Curtis Sittenfeld have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Made the characters more rounded. None of them were remotely likeable. Also the ending was a huge anti-climax. It had nothing to do with the "senses" the twins shared. This book should have been called "Why I Have a Brown Baby, by Kate Tucker/Daisy Shram"

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator's interpretation of the characters was borderline offensive. All the men sounded like gruff neanderthals (except for the black character who had an accent more suited to a plantation slave) The fat sister had an annoying whiny, nasal voice. The worst was the effeminate, lisping voice she gave to the "gay best friend". It was farcical from start to finish.

What character would you cut from Sisterland?

I found them all equally annoying. The main character was terrible though, she's supposed to be the protagonist but she was very hard to empathise with!

    Story
    "Compelling tale of complex relationships"

The relationships are the key to this story and its back-and-forth timeline of the narrative makes it a compelling experience. As the history of each association and bond is revealed, the narrator's character is similarly exposed. The looming deadline of the predicted catastrophe creates a tension and an impatience as you read on and on. Well worth dedicating 15 hours and 13 minutes to!

    "Excellent listening experience!"

I must say I was really impressed by this book and enjoyed it very much. I've not read her other books but found the concept intriguing. There are aspects of it that are disappointing and some of the most fascinating details are just skated over, but I enjoyed it so much I listened to it in bed and as I did the washing up! (Instead of just in the car) I got so caught up in the life of Kate that I've missed her since the end of the book!

Downsides were: this is not a plot driven novel and I do prefer those! And the way the narrator read the voice of the black character kind of sounded like she thought he was written by Mark Twain! And he wasn't a southern ex slave....!

Other than that I strongly recommend it!
