Publisher's summary

Meredith Martin Delinn just lost everything: Her friends, her homes, her social standing - because her husband Freddy cheated rich investors out of billions of dollars.

Desperate and facing homelessness, Meredith receives a call from her old best friend, Constance Flute. Connie's had recent worries of her own, and the two depart for a summer on Nantucket in an attempt to heal. But the island can't offer complete escape, and they're plagued by new and old troubles alike. When Connie's brother Toby - Meredith's high school boyfriend - arrives, Meredith must reconcile the differences between the life she is leading and the life she could have had.

Set against the backdrop of a Nantucket summer, Elin Hilderbrand delivers a suspenseful story of the power of friendship, the pull of love, and the beauty of forgiveness.

Critic reviews

“Clearly the Madoff family inspired this plot, but Hilderbrand gives it her own sun-kissed, optimistic spin - which is not to say it’s all Rosa rugosa, just that there’s a silver lining to the ugliest of circumstances.” (Elisabeth Egan, New York Times)

Liked it

I really liked the story but the narrator bothered me a bit. I really like Erin Bennett, the narrator EH has used in her more recent books.

Mirror of Madoff Story

Great story. critics may say that that without Madoff, there is no story here. Not really fair. While the overall story is similar to the Madoff story, there are many good sub stories and good character development.

Loved It

How the author can write such diverse books, each so well, is beyond me. All the characters were complex. amd all the loose ends ties up. great story!

Enjoyed the story line but some of the unneeded language bothered me. Great character development

Shocking

The story dragged. When it got to the murder I was very angry. The murder was unnecessary. I came very close to not finishing the book.

Plain silly and pointless

I got this book in a sale for $5 and I am sorry I wasted my time and money. Not relatable at all, keep dropping designers name, places and expensive fancy dishes for what!!!??? Two middle aged women acting like high school girls. I hated it.

One of the best

The story captured me right away. I enjoyed the entire story and characters. Ending was good, suns other of her books felt incomplete

Good

Not the best but good read, lacked some excitement and was sort of predictable, but was a good read.

Okay but not a show stopper

The narrator was good but the story was slow going. The plot and story were more predictable than her other books and I wasn’t as impressed as I have been with all of her other work.

Performers sound like old smokers

Performers were highly distracting with their 2 pack a day voices. It made me feel like fingers down a chalkboard. Took away from the story. I can’t imagine a billionaire wife sounding like she came from the streets. It’s too much. As I work with voice I know there were better actors out there for this role
