"Exciting, totally absorbing....be prepared for late nights, meals unlasting, buisness unattended." (Philadelphia Inquirer)
"Adventure and action, the suspense of danger, shocking, touching human relationships...a climactic human story." (Los Angeles Times)
Well it is SHOGUN so of course it's awesome. Now as an audio read the reader was OK could have been better but he wasn't bad. I love SHOGUN even the mini series. Now some say SHOGUN isn’t true or the history is off... of course it is it's FICTION LITTERATEUR... but it's an amazing read as a book and a really good listen as an Audible Book. I wish, pray, and hope one day you'll do the Tale of the Heike as an Audible and Musashi (please please please) those would sell great. I'd love to be the reader too. Anyway overall it's well worth it.
The story and plot are great.
Yes he's good just needs the right book.
It is a mini series... should be redone as a movie or better a television series.
Loved it great passing of time while driving. I wish, i pray, and i hope one day you'll do the Tale of the Heike as an Audible and Musashi (please please please) those would sell great.
I have loved this book for years, and it was good as an audio, although all the bad things that have been said about the narrator are true, I somewhat did get used to it and the robot sounding Japanese only bothered me a little.
crazy rottie mom
This book is by far one of James Clavells best work, I read the book years ago and fell in love with it, the characters are full and their own stories captivating. I thought the audiobook would be fabulous, it was the biggest dissapointment I ever had. The narration and the sound quality was terrible. The quality and volume changed throughout the presentation, and the worst was the narrator David Chase, his pronounciation of Japanese was an affront to a beautiful language, it made me cringe. Shame on the producers for producing such a substandard piece of work and casting such an unqualified person. His narration ruined this audiobook for me, so much so that I returned it unfinished and very dissatisfied.
Excellent narrative. I immerse myself in the characters.
The Godfather. You live the characters.
His passion for the book itself.
Yes. Definately. I read the paperback over 10 times.
You will love Shogun. Action, Adventure, Intrigue, Forbidden love...One of the best novels ever written by a master...a literary genius.
The story is one of the best I've ever read but the narrator is not quite up to snuff. His emphasis on the words doesn't feel right at times. Looses some of the impact that I feel when I read the book myself.
Not that great
Read this book many years ago and thought I would enjoy hearing it. The story is so good, but it's really hard listening to David Case's narration. His voices all sound pretty much the same and when he isn't speaking in character, his tone is monotonous to the point where I find myself losing the story and have to rewind to pick it up. Sad.
The narrator's gravelly and voice was an insurmountable obstacle to listening to the story. I stopped after a short while and abandoned it. Very disappointed.
Yes. I kept looking for reasons to listen to it, so it provided me incentive to walk home rather than take the El train!
Great characters, great insights into the historical dynamics of the complex relationships between nations at the time.
I have to respectfully disagree with my fellow reviewers. I have heard this narrator before (might have been Quo Vadis?), and his varied accents actually helped me keep the numerous characters straight. I realize that the accents may not 100% reflect the nuances of the home languages, but that is kind of why I like it. It is accessible to me.
This story is amazing. I learned so much about the Japanese customs that I never knew from this. As well as a few words of Japanese while listening to it. I enjoyed it so much that I immediately purchased the other James Clavell books available. I have always enjoyed historical novels but this is one that truly amazed me. You have got to read (listen) to it. The narrator does a great job with the different characters voices and keeps the story moving with voice inflection. This is the best thing about audio books. I can read a book while I am driving totally wonderful.
Say something about yourself!
A fantastic listen with a narrator that blossoms like a Japanese Cherry Tree.
An adventure story writhing with human frailties and great strengths, sorrowful tragedies interwoven with the beauty of love and respect.
This book is for anyone who believes in the honour a death deserves, and the glory of being alive.
