Shawgo | [Dusty Rhodes]

Shawgo

In the early 1870's, the young state of Texas was struggling to survive. Its vast, undeveloped land of over 260 thousand square miles became a haven for the lawless. Murderers, rustlers and renegade bands of hostile Indians and Comanchero roamed the vast wastelands of west Texas with only a narrow river separating them from the sanctuary of Mexico. One group of dedicated lawmen stood between this element and the law-abiding citizenry - the Texas Rangers. This is the story of one of those men.

Award-winning author Dusty Rhodes was born in Eastern Oklahoma - formerly the notorious Indian Territory. Dusty grew up on stories of the old west. After retirement, he began taking down those stories that had been gathering dust on the shelves of his mind and doing what he had dreamed of doing since childhood - writing historical westerns. His first book, Man Hunter, was named the best western e-book of 2002.

    "Good western"

Gene Engene does a great job reading Dusty Rhodes books. He has a great voice for a western. The book has a good story line and lots of action to keep one interested, no sex, foul words or unnecessary violence. Shawgo as a Texas Ranger chases bad men and Indians as well as corrupt politicians. The valley he lives in sounds beautiful, wish I could pack up and move there and watch the horses, cattle and goats graze. Hope there are more books about Shawgo. Westerns make a nice change of pace stories.

    "Great Western"

This was excellent in developing both plot and characters. Gave a real incite into every day life in the 1800's. Great read.

    "Excellent story"

Being a huge Louis L'Amour fan I wasn't sure this novel would be as good as it was. I was pleasantly surprised and feel it is as good as or better than any western I've read or listened to.

    "Nice Western"

I really liked the book. I thought it had a good story line and good detail. You can't beat a good main character and a reader that sounds like you would like the person to be. This fits.

    "SHAWGO "DUMB AS A ROCK""
What would have made Shawgo better?

A smarter hero as in his other books, Longhorn for example was great and it had smart heros galore..

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Since there is a book two and the promo has already ruined it, I can only say it will be a hard read if I choose to do so..

Which character – as performed by Gene Engene – was your favorite?

    Captain of the Texas
    rangers.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Shawgo?

Each time he foolishly left his Lady in jeopardy. When he gave up his gun, when he put the women in jeopardy again and again.

    Any additional comments?

Dusty Rhodes is a good writer and the reader Gene Engene is excellent, but this time he made his hero so dumb, giving up his gun to the small town Sheriff, putting Hanna in danger, falling asleep on the job, trying to save a fellow prisoner and getting beaten himself. And from the promo of book two, "it don't get no better"..

    Story
    "Fantastically entertaining!!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would and indeed HAVE recommended this audiobook to my wife who does not like westerns because the story is very well written and the performance is top notch. She loved it as well and is now hooked on Mr Rhodes western audiobooks

What did you like best about this story?

I liked how the author endears the characters to the reader with just the right amount of description. Many authors fall short with this while others go overboard and derail the story with too much character insight at the wrong time. I don't think Mr Rhodes is given enough credit for this.

What does Gene Engene bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mr Engene brings life to the story. His range of vocalizations is not only exceptional, it is consistent. A character is that character everytime you hear him/her. He is an amazing performer and in my opinion, the best western audiobook narrator by a considerable margin

If you could take any character from Shawgo out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Leander McNelly, Captain of the Texas Rangers because he has that understated "coolness" that you just can't get enough of

    Any additional comments?

"Shawgo" exceeded my expectations. I have listened to all of Mr Rhodes' westerns except the "Longhorn" series and until I listened to "Shawgo" (both book one and two), the author's "Manhunter" was my favorite. I put the Shawgo series at the same fantastic level. From the opening chapter through the way he closes a story to the way Mr Engene narrates, these stories are entertainment at it's finest. Notice I said "entertainment" - sure there are more thrilling, more cerebral, more technically precise stories out there, but for sheer entertainment value - fun, engaging....."entertaining", there is none better. Well done!!

I enjoy counter-terrorism, westerns, historical fiction, detective mysteries, and old school comedy like "A Christmas Story".

    "Love my Westerns"

This was not as enjoyable as "Manhunter" by the same author and narrator as "Shawgo". I gave it an overall 4 because I was still feeling warm and fuzzy over my listen of "Manhunter". The story was not as strong but the performance was excellent so I gave it a begrudging 4 overall. I plan to listen to more books by Dusty Rhodes, narrated by Gene Eugene, and hope I can find some which equal the pleasure I received listening to "Manhunter".

"Another Good One by Dusty Rhodes!"

Dusty Rhodes has a way of holding your attention to the end. He seems to know to what lengths he can go into his descriptions of things giving the reader a mental picture of the terrain, people, or situation without boring them.

Although fiction, Shawgo gives us an idea of the dangers of being a Texas Ranger and the wide scope of their duties...and why they were sorely needed to bring law and order into a lawless land.

Gene Engene was a good choice for narrator--he gave a great performance.

This book should not disappoint any fan of western genre.

I read the book some time ago and find Rhodes a fun recreational read. Have Gene Engene read for me in the car during a commute is quite enjoyable.
