Publisher's summary

Here is one of those rare novels, the first in an epic series, that completely transports the listener to an unforgettable time and place in history. At Talavera in July of 1809, Captain Richard Sharpe, bold, professional, and ruthless, prepares to lead his men against the armies of Napoleon into what will be the bloodiest battle of the war. Sharpe has earned his captaincy, but there are others, such as the foppish Lieutenant Gibbons and his uncle, Colonel Henry Simmerson, who have bought their commissions despite their incompetence. After their cowardly loss of the regiment's colors, their resentment toward the upstart Sharpe turns to treachery, and Sharpe must battle his way through sword fights and bloody warfare to redeem the honor of his regiment.

good story, love the history

this would be better if performed better, but Cornwell traces the history pretty well, in this book books most important part might be the historical explanation at the end.

Great Swashbuckling Adventure

I was very pleased to find this book. I love historical fiction but can’t stand anachronisms or revisionism. Thankfully Cornwell does justice to his subject while also keeping one entertained. Will happily check out the rest of the series.

Probably Sharpes most epic adventure yet.

In this story Sharpe is finally promoted to Captain, and the matter in which he earns his captaincy is awesome to listen to. The events that lead to the battle in the end and the descriptions of the battle kept me attentive and excited to hear every word. Davidson does a great job narrating, as ever

A Great Adventure

Recommended by a friend, I began the book not really knowing what to expect, and I was richly rewarded, enough so that I didn’t want it to end.
