Publisher's Summary

As Napoleon threatens to crush Britain in battle, Lt. Col. Richard Sharpe leads a ragtag army to exact a personal revenge.

In the spring of 1811, one of the most bitter battles of the Peninsular War is about to commence. The hopes and hearts of all of Britain are turned toward Spain, where victory will be won or lost.

A skilled leader and proven hero, Richard Sharpe takes charge of an Irish battalion from the king of Spain's household guard. But poorly equipped and untrained, they are easily ambushed by an elite French unit commanded by Sharpe's deadly enemy, Brigadier General Guy Loup. Sharpe and Loup have tangled before, and now the fighting wolf means to exact his revenge. But something goes terribly wrong in their bloody skirmish, and Sharpe is faced with the ruin of his career and reputation. Stripped of everything he holds dear, all he has left is his honor, spirit, and courage. To redeem himself in the eyes of his men and his country, his task is clear: to lead his men to glory on the bloody streets of Spain, or die trying.

    "Another excellent Sharpe Adventure"

Fredrick Davidson must really enjoy the Sharpe novels. I have listened to him on several different titles and he is always solid but many times he comes across as a precise but aloof narrator. This is not the case with Sharpe as he really comes alive reading Bernard Cornwell's series. I recognize every character by the voice he gives them, without needing the text to guide me, and his Patrick Harper is perfect. The emotions in the words on the page erupt into reality as Davidson tells the story. Other narrators do a quality job with Cornwell's work but Davidson is the best.

This would not be possible of course if Cornwell didn't write such memorable tales. I have listened to every unabridged work by Cornwell that Audible has offered and eagerly await the ones to come.

    "What a villian!"

Brigadier General Guy Loup and his gray wolves are the best rival that Sharpe has ever had.

I have been listening to books on tape for over 20 years. Starting with audio tapes, then CD's and now downloads.

"One of the Best of the Sharpe series"

Mr. Davidson makes this book come alive. With the characters that you will either love or hate, the excitement and dread of battle come alive. There were times I actually laughed out loud while listening to this novel.

    "Good but not great"

I don't think this is the best of the Sharpe books as it seemed a little formulaic, but it was still fun to listen to. Enjoyed the different Irish accents in this one.
