I love Dean Koontz books. I must have read and listened to dozens of them. So I was very much looking forward to this one. 18 hours of listening. After the first hour, I couldn't believe the narrator. Other than the main character, a woman, all other male voices sound like one of the munchkins from the Wizard of Oz. I kid you not. It was so annoying that I gave up after about 3 hours. I also didn't like her over exaggeration. I'm dissapointed but I guess I'll read the book instead of listening to it.
I'm a fan of Dean Koontz' books but I'll never know about this one! The narrator reads clearly but with a thud-like monotonous cadence that is far too sticky-sweeet for a Dean Koontz novel; she would be better suited to a bodice-ripper or Redbook. I can't stand any of the characters and her reading makes all of the women sound on the verge of hyseterics - I've made it into the second part and am finally giving up on it after listening to her read more of the "sexy" parts - who cares what happens to these weenies?
I have read and enjoyed many of Dean Koontz's books but I really can't believe how bad this one was.... the effort to finish was tiring.
First of all, I am not an idiot so I don't need a long detailed explanation of why someone puts a chair under a doorknob or why someone is pointing a gun at the ceiling instead of the floor. In fact it really isn't relevant to the story at all how someone is holding a gun between action scenes while they are just talking.... if ever there was a need for an abridged version!
Which brings me to the next point. I also don't need to know every item of junk in a garage. Or every piece of furniture in a room that the characters spend all of five minutes in. Sometimes it seems like the author is just looking for a chance to increase his page count, or use over-superlative hyperbolic descriptions of wealth, power or intelligence. Many times after a character's long-winded over-stated self reflection I'd actually say out loud "Can we move on now?"
Then there are the inconsistencies..... Eric is fueled by rage, but controlling the rage in order to maintain normal behavior, so that he can ultimately carry out his rage. Rachel is another example, going back and forth from strong to whiney as it suits the plot just to make sure she is at the right place to be put in jeopardy. So contrived!
Also, the psychic powers that some of these characters seem to have, which they have to painstakingly explain in the narration of what this person will probably do and what that person will probably do, in order to lead to the next likely chain of probable events that the next character just "figures out".
And the reading... I have never heard and insect go "reee" "reee" the way that narrator sounded. Not even trying to do sound effects, just reading the letters on the page. SO annoying I cringed every time I heard it. Mens' voices too were just awful. Some narrators don't know how to read the opposite gender and they over act or over modify their voices, as was the case here. The key is to use your highest or lowest NORMAL speaking voice to differentiate, not sound like a munchkin!
The characters were unsympathetic. In the first chapter I wanted Ben to either die or take Rachel's break-up with him seriously. I don't know if it was his wish that the Vietnam War would go on forever or his pompous, self-righteous preaching on morality but he became a very tiresome character from the get-go. In fact, the entire book got very preachy and I felt like I was getting more of an agenda than a story.
I'd say skip this one and read "False Memory" or "Intensity". Those are the best Koontz books.
Koontz makes comments at the end of the book and says this was one of his favorites. It was also one of his original book from back in the eighties. I am glad I didn't start reading his books until a few years ago. If I would have started with this one, I wouldn't be listening to him now. If your really enjoy his books from the late nineties until now, you probably won't like this on.
I HAVE TO AGREE WITH THE OTHER REVIEWERS. AFTER THE FIRST TEN MINUTES, I COULDN'T WAIT TO GET TO THE END SO I COULD GET TO ANOTHER BOOK.
I'M A BIG FAN OF DEAN KOONTZ BUT THE NARRATOR ON THIS ONE MADE ME DOUBT IF HE EVEN WROTE IT.
OF COURSE, THE ODD THOMAS BOOKS HAVE BEEN GETTING A LITTLE TOO INTROSPECTIVE (IF THAT IS THE RIGHT WORD) FOR MY TASTES, RECENTLY.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS AUDIO BOOK. IT MIGHT BE OKAY IF IT IS READ.
I used to like to read Dean Koontz novels. Perhaps they are a better "read" then "listen" or perhaps I just evolved as a reader. This book was old "B" movie predictable.
I'm not sure whether the narrator was wrong or if the material she had to work with was. The initial suspense -- what is it that Rachel won't tell -- was completely unbelievable since you have no insight into why Rachel won't say anything. The narrator is irritatingly talking in other voices (incompetently) and compounds the problem. The plot is painstakingly drawn out. I couldn't continue listening after three hours.
I focus on fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, science, history, politics and read a lot. I try to review everything I read.
This is more horror than the standard Koontz. Nevertheless it still focuses upon characters and relationships more than almost any horror. There is little gore, more psychological tension. The female character is strong and interesting. This has Koontz's standard wide range of interesting characters (but no dog). I liked it. Not top notch Koontz, but quite good.
I agree that there was a complete mismatch between reader and story, which really made this audio book a difficult listen. The reader actually sounds a lot like Annette Funicello, which was really funny when she read some of the racier parts or when she tried to imitate the voice of the antagonist. Indeed, her voices were quite bad. At one point she attempted an Hispanic accent and only managed to sound like Dracula. I think that she might be a good reader for a different type of book, but sounded silly reading this one.
Also, this might be one of Koontz's older novels and is certainly not one of his best. While the story was okay and did have a great deal of suspense, many of the ideas that underlied the book were dated and irritating (e.g. a woman was described as undesirable because of a hand deformity, as well as other sorts of sexist ideas and ways of valuing people based on physical appearance). As a woman, I did not enjoy listening to this stuff, which is silly considering that the main protagonist is female and thus the book must have been to some extent written for a feminine readership. All in all-- the novel was a pretty flat, generic and one-dimensional story.

"Not for the faint hearted"
A very very compelling story but as it approaches its climax it makes uncomfortable listening! The author grabs you with both hands, shakes you like a rabid dog before allowing you to escape the story back into reality.
Nightmares? A possibility.
Nausea? A certainty.
Still; excellent!!! ;-)
I am afraid I could not get past part one. The reader sounds monotonous, really not good at all! probably spoil t a good story.
"Mutated beastie runs amok"
This was pretty daft, but worth a listen anyway. A young wife is leaving the law firm of her soon to be ex-husband after settling the divorce legalities. The husband is taunting her when, blam, he gets run over....but his body disappears from the morgue and some big beastie is on the prowl.
