Publisher's summary

The number one New York Times best-selling sequel to A Discovery of Witches, book two of the All Souls Series. Look for the hit TV series A Discovery of Witches, streaming on AMC Plus, Sundance Now, and Shudder. Season Two premieres January 9, 2021!

Picking up from A Discovery of Witches' cliff-hanger ending, Shadow of Night takes reluctant witch Diana Bishop and vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782—the lost and enchanted manuscript whose mystery first pulled Diana and Matthew into one another's orbit—deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew's past tightens around them. Together they find they must embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey.

Great Story, Great Characters

it took me awhile to get into the 1st book, and this one went too fast! Much more exciting! The narrator does a fabulous job with all the different accents! I can't say enough...

My favorite book of the series!!

There's one mistake with Sophie's accent in the end. She's from North Carolina not an Aussie. That's her husband & mother in law Agatha. We know this from book 1.
Its even mentioned earlier in the book when they meet the Normans (Sopbie's ancestors)& talk about them ending up in NC &, in Elizabethan England regarding the chess piece. They wonder how & why Kit would get it to them or give it to them.
We actually find out how they end up with it. (Don't wanna give up spoilers :-))

The performance is good but some of the pronunciations were wrong. It is modern American pronunciations not German or French

The pronunciation of Matthias is wrong - it should be Matthias (th-ee-as) not (th-ai-yas)

The end makes you want to know what happens next

I enjoyed the story. I don’t feel like the sexual descriptions are needed and almost make it too filthy to be respectable. For that reason I won’t recommend the story to my grandmother lol. I think the bits that leave the couple’s bedroom life to the imagination are better. Still a great story and I love how detailed she is about the historical content

Like most series The First book was better

The first book was far more captivating- so much so that I took longer car rides than necessary and would even sit in my driveway to finish certain parts. This second book however had a very different feel. I finished two other audiobook before finishing this one.
This second installment I felt had too many different characters at play, some whom I’m not really sure needed to be included....
The romance between Matthew and Dianna was severely lacking in comparison as well. And the overall feel of these characters that attracted me to them from the first book was not really there in the ways I would of liked either.
The performance/reading of the book was very well done though, and I do appreciate the different voices as that did help to keep up with the overwhelming amount of characters.
