Publisher's summary

The number one New York Times best-selling sequel to A Discovery of Witches, book two of the All Souls Series. Look for the hit TV series A Discovery of Witches, streaming on AMC Plus, Sundance Now, and Shudder. Season Two premieres January 9, 2021!

Picking up from A Discovery of Witches' cliff-hanger ending, Shadow of Night takes reluctant witch Diana Bishop and vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782—the lost and enchanted manuscript whose mystery first pulled Diana and Matthew into one another's orbit—deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew's past tightens around them. Together they find they must embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey.

Surprisingly NSFW

I enjoyed the contiuation of the story with the historical elements (especially because i forgot so much since high school)
The sex scenes somehow startled me, i dont know if they dont firt or i felt uncomfortable because i was on the bus at the time 😄

This book was so much better then the first!! great story and character development 👏. the first book was so slow and I felt took forever to get though. I Almont did not get this on because of it. I was so happy I gave it a second chance.

I'm glad I didn't read reviews before I purchased

While this is not as good as the first book, it is still entertaining, and adds details that are so important to the series.

There were areas of repetitiveness, there were a few parts that were slow moving, but for the most part, it felt like a necessary part of the transition from the overwhelming rush of the first book.

The characters are rounded out, you get the opportunity to be disappointed in Matthew and even roll your eyes at Diana on occasion.

Overall, a solid second book and I flew through it at a ferocious pace, just like A Discovery of Witches.

An excellent sequel

This book was nearly as enjoyable as the first, though in a very different way. The two stories are only connected through common characters; the telling of the two is completely different. The feeling of the two is also completely changed. But this is still somehow an excellent sequel.

Great fantasy love story

Great continuation of Book 1. While I’m impressed by the interpretation of the Golem story, I could have lived without the Jews of 1500s Prague sounding like Brooklyn Jews. And Sophie’s accent has switched from Southern to Australian. Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyable.

Lovely book, way too long

I love this trilogy but this book was so long and had way too many characters that really weren’t necessary. It was a struggle to stay with it.
I’m hoping the third book doesn’t let me down.
Performance was fantastic and storyline is great but it could have been like 10 hours shorter. Literally.

Exactly what I’m looking for…

A Discovery of Witches, the series, is a wonderful read. I loved the tv series and enjoy the books even more. They’re the perfect books to read when you’re looking for a series that is reminiscent of autumn and times past infused with the supernatural. It’s very much a supernatural dark academia feeling series and I love it.

Favorite of the Trilogy

This book was my absolute FAVORITE of the trilogy, the history is phenomenal for story and world immersion. I’ve now hunted down the TV series to revisit the world and it reminds me of how much I loved these books so I came back to leave a review and show my appreciation. (If you haven’t, I 100% recommend reading Time’s Convert after the trilogy, loved Marcus and Pheobe’s story as well).
