Publisher's summary

The number one New York Times best-selling sequel to A Discovery of Witches, book two of the All Souls Series. Look for the hit TV series A Discovery of Witches, streaming on AMC Plus, Sundance Now, and Shudder. Season Two premieres January 9, 2021!

Picking up from A Discovery of Witches' cliff-hanger ending, Shadow of Night takes reluctant witch Diana Bishop and vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782—the lost and enchanted manuscript whose mystery first pulled Diana and Matthew into one another's orbit—deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew's past tightens around them. Together they find they must embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey.

I love it!

This series by Deborah Harkness has been a great listen. Such a winding story, always changing. You never really see what is coming.

Fascinating if slow moving

Since the book is a few years old already I don't see much of a point in adding to the extensive existing detailed reviews of the book itself.

I do however feel the need to comment on the narration.

It is overall adequate with a good distinction of different voices for different characters. Sadly the narrator is missing when it comes to foreign languages. The Latin is hard to understand with questionable choices as to which syllables should be emphasized. It is somewhat excusable since the correct pronunciation of "dead" languages can be argued. This also goes for the older forms of French, Spanish and Greek as occur in the book.
The German however was atrocious. Furthermore any narrator needs to decide to be consistent when choosing to pronounce historical figure's names. It shouldn't be English conventions for some and original language for others as in the case of HIeronymus Bosch.

I only listen to audio hooks when I walk. this book was so good I didnt want my daily walks to be over. so much feeling. even though it deals with the supernatural the struggle is completely relatable

Shadow of Night Shines

It's rare that a sequel rises to the same level or surpasses that of the original, but Deb Harkness has done so with this one.
