Publisher's summary

The number one New York Times best-selling sequel to A Discovery of Witches, book two of the All Souls Series. Look for the hit TV series A Discovery of Witches, streaming on AMC Plus, Sundance Now, and Shudder. Season Two premieres January 9, 2021!

Picking up from A Discovery of Witches' cliff-hanger ending, Shadow of Night takes reluctant witch Diana Bishop and vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782—the lost and enchanted manuscript whose mystery first pulled Diana and Matthew into one another's orbit—deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew's past tightens around them. Together they find they must embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey.

Takes the Story in a Whole New Direction

If you could sum up Shadow of Night in three words, what would they be?

Full of backstory

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hard to say...Matthew is so romantic but Ysebeau's character development really draws you in.

Have you listened to any of Jennifer Ikeda’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Ikeda's performance in Shadow of Night is even more impressive than in Discovery of Witches. Most of the book takes place in Europe so there are tons of different languages and accents, compounded by each character's trademark inflections, it's hard to believe so many voices can come from one person.

Any additional comments?

After finishing Discovery of Witches I was eager for Diana and Matthew to make progress in their fight against the Congregation and find answers to all of the questions brought up in the first book. Shadow of Night introduces a new batch of adventures that add depth to the events and mysteries in book one but it's definitely not a linear progression and it's just as much of a cliff-hanger. Conclusion: can't wait for book three!

enjoyable

Despite my dislike for Elizabethan Era I still got into this. there are lots of new characters but it is no One Hundred Years of Solitude in those terms. The detail and flow are similar to the first book and I am ready for the next one. I have to wonder about a change in accent for Sophie in the end...was this an oversight by the narrarator or part of something we don't know yet?

If you could sum up Shadow of Night in three words, what would they be?

Great story Line but a little bit too slow for me

What other book might you compare Shadow of Night to and why?

Buffy maybe (have only seen bits and pieces of that show...)

What does Jennifer Ikeda bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

the accents of the characters.

Be prerpared to be left hanging, book 3 is not out

What made the experience of listening to Shadow of Night the most enjoyable?

By this book you are already invested in the characters and their well being. This one was set in Elizabethan London so the history was interesting.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shadow of Night?

Rather than memorable moments I would say the best parts were the mystery, spies and breadth of the story that made it so captivating.

Which character – as performed by Jennifer Ikeda – was your favorite?

Diana's love Matthew is the perfect imperfect heroin.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely

Any additional comments?

Its very frustrating that the 3rd installment is not yet out. So I would caution you if you want complete resolution don't start this series until the 3rd is out.
