He comes face-to-face with his doubts in the person of Danny Butler, a mid-level drug runner Miller hopes to use to catch a much larger fish: Roberto Hinestroza, a drug lord Miller has pursued for years.

Danny has no interest in being a witness against his boss, both out of a sense of twisted loyalty and because he knows double-crossing Hinestroza is a sure death sentence. But he reluctantly agrees to cooperate, and as he suspects, it doesn’t take long for Hinestroza to figure out the betrayal.

Miller is surprised to discover Danny's not the career-criminal lowlife he expected; at the same time, Danny finds himself helplessly attracted to Miller's innate goodness. They barely begin to explore the sparking attraction between them when Hinestroza's hitman tracks them down, and then they're on the run, both for their lives and for any kind of love.

    "Great book, great narrator"
If you could sum up Shades of Gray in three words, what would they be?

    Romantic action thriller

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the progression of the romance between Miller and Danny and the unpredictable turn it took.

Have you listened to any of Paul Morey’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to many of Paul Morey's performances and I love them all. His range and diversity of voices really makes listening to him a treat.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, but I have already read the book, I just wanted to hear Paul narrate the story.

    Any additional comments?

This is a great story and I love the MCs. It has lots of action and some very uncomfortable violence, but it is necessary for the story. Drug dealing is a brutal business. I really wish there was a sequel.

    "Yes!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Shades of Gray to be better than the print version?

I read the book couple of years ago and it struck me as a brilliant piece of writing among hundreds and hundreds of mediocre M/M novels. So, I bought this audiobook the instant I saw it on Audible. I haven't listened to it yet, but judging by the preview it is going to be awesome in audio format as well.
I desperately wish the author would write more!

    Story
    "a tale of two halves"

The narrator was good. He really brought me along with this one.

This story featured Danny Butler, a drug dealer who was pulled over on a weapons charge and the FBI was leaning on him to testify against his boss. After his boss sent some goons to silence him, Danny had to go on the run while waiting for the trial. FBI agent Miller Sutton was the FBI agent who worked tirelessly for 3 years to bring down the Crime Lord Hinestroza, so he wasn't going to let anything happen to his star witness Danny Butler.

While on the run, Danny and Miller got to know each other and soon started sleeping together. There was a lot at stake as Miller is an FBI agent (with a fiancee) and Danny is a felon. The decks were stacked high, and soon Danny and Miller felt the weight of all their past choices, and it seemed like their love wouldn't survive.

I loved the first half of the story, and the second half dragged a little bit. I think it was because the first half was the discovery of their love and while the second half was the discovery of the individuals as "gay" men (self discovery). Danny carried a lot of pain and self loathing, so I am glad he started feeling like he was worth something by the end. Miller had no insight to himself, but Danny's love forced him to come clean to himself and then everyone else. It cost him, but he gained self respect. I enjoyed seeing how they both battled separate demons, but realized they are stronger together.

I wish the author gave an epilogue about Rachel, Miller's fiance...and maybe the crime syndicate Danny was running from.

    "Good M/M Love Story"

I really, really enjoyed listening to this story. It is essentially a love story between a male FBI agent and a male drug informant. Both are masculine men though I wouldn't call either Alpha males in the way they were portrayed in the book. I liked that they weren't Alpha but just rather regular, common-type guys. The story also had a criminal element, but it was not the focus. The dialogue is good, and the situations and reactions were interesting and logical. Everything could happen, I thought, which added to my delight with the story. I absolutely loved the trials and angst. I like stories that indicate that life is not easy and people's choices are not either, and everything has consequences. The narrator did a good job with the story. The only reason I didn't give the performance 5 stars is that the differentiation between the male characters was so slight as to make it hard to know who was talking. And the story and overall scoring resulted in 4 stars because I like a bit more raunchiness in my sex scenes. But they were still great and just numerous enough. They were, by no means, overdone and always fit the story and time. Overall, the story is more romantic than erotic but still very good. I won't tell you if there's a HEA. You'll have to listen to find out.

"Good story, narrator not so much"
What did you love best about Shades of Gray?

The way the relationship developed between criminal and fbi guy.

What did you like best about this story?

Danny. He was a refreshingly honest about his actions although he had a hard time moving past them.

How could the performance have been better?

Different narrator. He doesn't inflect properly. It sounds like he's just reading the book instead of becoming the characters. Shannon Gunn or Chris Patton would of been better.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes. I listen at work

"My First Brooke Miller - I Doubt I'll Try Another"
Would you be willing to try another book from Brooke McKinley? Why or why not?

Probably not, the story was weak - in my opinion.

Miller Sutton, a by-the-book FBI agent, is starting to see some troubling shades of gray in his black-and-white world. He comes face-to-face with his doubts in the person of Danny Butler, a mid-level drug runner Miller hopes to use to catch a much larger fish: Roberto Hinestroza, a drug lord Miller has pursued for years.

Have you listened to any of Paul Morey’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but his narration and voice are great.

    Any additional comments?

I'm not sure how I ended up buying/listening to this book. It was o.k. story-wise but nothing exceptional.

There is a gay romance and rather flimsy plot. Not my cup of tea but others may like it.

    "So f'ing good."

I love the tension in this story. Every part of the developing relationship is beautiful and challenging and really well handled. The external conflicts and dangers they face keep the story moving and dramatic. But my favorite thing is that this story doesn't present anything as simple. Love doesn't magically make everything perfect. These characters have to work and fight for their happy ending and that made it really satisfying when it all does finally work out. I loved this book.

    "Great Listen"

I definitely have to say this story surprised me on many levels. I loved the development between the main characters and their evolving relationship. It wasn't instantaneous and they had to work through their pre-conceived ideas of each other. I really enjoyed the narrator and I didn't feel the voice changes between characters were too close to identify each character. As for the physical relationship between the 2 men, it was very tastefully written.

If your looking for a book that is action packed and center's around the law and taking down a drug dealer this story is not for you. If you are looking for great character development and an engaging story then this book is well worth your credit. As I was looking for a great story this book definitely exceeded my expectations.

    "Great Morey Narration"

I am really getting into Paul Morey's narration lately. I like this story alot. You have to be a fan of m/m romance. Drug informant and cop start a relationship under a sting. I like a m/m romance with a good storyline and nice smexing.. but that don't take forever to get to the smexing. This did a nice job of story building with smexing thrown in with a ending... Great. plus with Morey's narration..wht could be better...
