Publisher's summary

Thirteen lives. One garden. Set in Cleveland, Newbery-Award-winning author Paul Fleischman's poignant book is a large lesson in connectedness and community for all. When a derelict vacant lot is gradually transformed into a community garden in inner city Cleveland, the people of this community find their differences are less apparent and their isolation dissolved. Performed by thirteen multicuturally and age-authentic voices, this audiobook is designed for listeners of all ages.

Critic reviews

"Fleischman's talent for writing stories from various points of view makes his works particularly appealing in audiobook form. Here, 13 different characters come alive via the distinct performances of a widely varied cast. The range of voices and styles suggests a true community." (Publishers Weekly)

A nice story, relevant for the gardener in all of

us. We all need to feel connected, this story helps to grow relationships in a rundown area.

Highly Reccomend

This was truly a fantastic little book. The characters are real, and I find myself in the garden.

Earth Day Gift

Would you consider the audio edition of Seedfolks to be better than the print version?

Yes, the voices in their different accents make this delightful.

What did you like best about this story?

It is realistic, but focuses on hopefulness. I real pick-me-up. Not just for children at all.

Any additional comments?

I started listening on the way to the metro, not realizing until I was greeted with a packet of seeds from the Dept. of Agriculture that today was Earth Day! What a super story to listen to on Earth Day. It makes you want to see the best in all living things - people as well as plants, and maybe find your better self as well.

The Power of Planting

Would you listen to Seedfolks again? Why?

I WILL listen to this again.

What did you like best about this story?

How a community garden brought together and united a neighborhood. It shows how a garden in an urban environment can have an overwhelming positive impact on people.

What does Full Cast bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The Full Cast brings to life the characters more to life as opposed to a single narrator, as well as, creating a relateable characters to the listener. You can 'see' the people in your mind.

Who was the most memorable character of Seedfolks and why?

There are many memorable characters. The girl who plants the first seeds, the man who makes a contest as to how to water, the old man in the wheelchair who reacts so strongly to the flowers, the woman who spent a day on the phone to get the trash removed, the lettuce grower... so many memorable characters for such a short audiobook.

Any additional comments?

I listened to this as I was working in my gardens which, most likely, made it a bit more touching to me than it should have but I worked all the while with a smile on my face. It should be noted I've only been gardening for a few years but it was a joy listening as I rediscovered the magic that first attracted me to work in the dirt with my hands.
