"For lovers of chicklits and romantic stories"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I liked the book, but I did not love it.
I did like the humour and the setting of the story. Which begins with Tess just driving off to a new life. It seems like something I would do and therefore is a very good start of the story.
But for some reason Joe didn't sound real to me. It was just the way he was narrated. Everything Joe said was spoken quite harsh by Phoebe James. It actually got a bit annoying at 3/4 of the book.
If you love chicklits and romantic stories, than this is a nice read. But to be honest there are better books.

    "Disappointed"

After reading some of reviews I decided to download this book. To be honest I wish I hadn't bothered. After 5 hours of rambling with not much of a real story line, I decided to move on to something else. In my opinion I thought it was utterly boring.

    "annoying narrator"

After reading the other reviews, I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunatley I couldnt listen to the narrators annoying voice anymore and gave up after chapter 3. Maybe when ive gathered a little of my mental strength back, I might be able to finish it.
Usually love this type of easy listening audio book, but the unsuitably posh narrators voice just didnt suit the story. Very disappointed.

"A good plot, made tedious by the writing"

This book opens promisingly with some intriguing questions: who is Tess hiding from? Why is she running away? - but unfortunately as the story develops it becomes very tedious. The main problem is the exceptionally slow pace of the plot. There is a good story in here but it is difficult to find underneath all the padding: endless minute descriptions of mundane events, and far too many long-winded conversations and discussions which don?t serve either to illuminate the characters or move the story along.
Tess is supposed to be thirty but a lot of the time she behaves like a silly teenager. The author may have deliberately made her a bit dappy in an attempt to make her character more appealing, but I just found her irritating.
Although the descriptions of the locations are very detailed, I never felt that they evoked much of an atmosphere or captured a spirit of place. There are occasional moments of tension and drama, but these are eclipsed by the plodding tempo of the rest of the story. The switches between past and present tense are pointless and annoying.
I struggled on to the end, but wished I hadn?t wasted time on the last hour, in which nothing really happens but a parcelling-up into a saccharine happy ending. Whatever Joe?s excuses, I find it quite inconceivable that he ?forgot? to mention to Tess the decision he has made about the house.
This is the first book I have listened to/read by Freya North, and I?m afraid it doesn?t inspire me to try any of her others.

    "The secret to likeable leads"

The leads in this book were pretty unlikeable, therefore, I found this book a bit disappointing. A young mum, running from something in London, turns up at a Northerner's home to housesit for him when he is abroad with work. The mum was very touchy and snappy and the man was, as we say in Scotland 'a right slapper' claiming to be in love but sleeping all over the place, so I didn't really warm to either of them. The secrets were a bit daft and just rushed in at the end as if the author suddenly realised she needed to reference her title!

    "Loved hearing the whole story!"

When I first listened to this book I loved it, my first experience was by the abridged audiobook. I enjoyed it so much and when I saw the unabridged audiobook that was released later I just had to get it, so I purchased it straight away.

I didn't actually realise that this audiobook was read by someone else, it did take me a while to get used to it because this reader pronounced words differently. For example in the abridged version the child's name is pronounced as Emmalean and in the unabridged its pronounced Emmaline.

After a while I was fine and really got into the book and the reader, I personally think as much as the reader in the abridged version was better that this one is still fine and I would happily listen to another audiobook read by her. Its certainly not one of those books that you can't stand to listen to because the reader is awful.

This is the first time I have listened (or even read) anything by Freya North and I must say I was amazed. She is a fantastic writer and does so very well. Its all so real, it's as if its really happening and your being taken along for the ride :). It's so addictive you can't stop listening....

I really loved this book, the relationships were so real and true and it made my heart beat. The way she writes is fantastic, so very real and there is several scenes where she has written so well you'll feel everything that happens in that moment - your heart will start to beat and you'll yurn for it too.

I have recommended this book to a few of my friends and even suggested by husband listen to it as I think he would like it or at least be happy to listen along with me.

If I had to say which was better, abridged or unabridged I would struggle to say as they are both good. As I loved the book so much after listening to the abridged I loved the unabridged as I got to hear all of the book, I couldn't believe how much was cut out so I really enjoyed it. This is now my favourite audiobook!

"Nice book, not a great Narrator"

I went back to this book a few times to finish it. I didnt enjoy the Narrator, I didn't think the voice was suited to the main character at all and it was difficult to imagine.

"Feel good story that never ages"

To start with I found the narrator difficult to listen too and because of that I couldn?t get on with the audiobook, however, I persevered and I?m glad I did. As the story began to pick up momentum, the narrator appeared to be easing into the flow of the story and it became a joy to listen to see the two main characters develop. Some of the characters' tales made me laugh out loud.

Overall I would recommend this book and say if, like me, you find it difficult to connect with the narrator at first, keep going because it will click in to place and will be worth it in the end.

    "absoloutely lovely"
What did you like most about Secrets?

The way the story gently unfolds and keeps picture painting details in. Small details make the difference.

What does Phoebe James bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The northern accent made it more believable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No enjoyed it over several sittings.

    "my first audible listen"

I was hooked - especially as my new car has a jac allowing me to listen through the car speakers as I drive - better than same old music and bad news any morning!
This was a light hearted story - just what I like - nothing complicated - didn't need too much concentration. The narrator was really good and read at a decent pace.

    "UNFINISHED"

I was very disappointed with this book - the narration is dreadful, the story boring and despite several attempts I have never finished it. I still don't know what the "secrets" were and honestly, I don't care.....
