Story
The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct and the half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Beyond their boundaries, they say, lie endless burned-out deserts and the remains of splintered forests. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind, but the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory. Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on Earth....

Publisher's summary
Pride sent them into the caves, but terror will drive them out.
During China’s tumultuous Cultural Revolution, the People’s Liberation Army dispatches an elite group of prospectors famous for their work uncovering rare minerals to the mountains of rural Inner Mongolia. Their assignment: to bring honor to their country by descending into a maze of dank caves to find and retrieve the remnants of a buried Japanese World War II bomber. How the aircraft ended up beneath thousands of feet of rock baffles the team, but they’ll soon encounter far more treacherous forces lurking in the shadows. Each step taken - and each life lost - brings them closer to a mind-bending truth that should never see the light of day.

Part 1?????
Any additional comments?
A fascinating book with a very abrupt and unsatisfying ending. Author information and reviews on the main Amazon site indicate that this is the first book of either a pair or a series. Even though it just stops, it held my interest through both a first listen and a second - which is why it didn't end up with one star.
