Horrible Narrator

After thoroughly enjoying Maeve Binchy's Week In Winter and Tara Road (narrated by Rosalyn Landor and Katherine Borowitz, respectively), I was looking forward to another great story in Scarlet Feather. However, I could not get past the unpleasant narration by Barbara Caruso. Absolutely every sentence is dripping with overacting. The dramatic pauses, breathlessness, and emphatic exclamation just makes this book exhausting and hard to follow. The relentless intonations are unrelated to what is actually going on and detract from the story-- drama for the sake of drama, not connected to the storyline. I really tried, but after about an hour and a half, I surrendered. I will go out of my way to avoid this narrator from now on.

vintage binchy

Would you listen to Scarlet Feather again? Why?

I love Maeve Binchy's stories, the way characters are developed and evolve over time, and that they may recur in later tales. Each time through, I notice something different. They aren't overly complex, but her gentle view of humanity is a pleasure.

Wrong narrator

The story was just okay. The narrator does not match with the age of the characters. I could not help but picture all of these twenty-somethings as 40 years olds.

The narrator makes it impossible to listen to

This is by far the worse narrator I have listened to, and I've been listening to a minumum of two books a month for four years. At times adopts what is meant to be an Irish accent, which isn't sustained. Also does what is supposed to be a Nigerian accent but is nothing like anything I've hear. Also, when she does "adopt" the accent the characters sound old, but they're meant to be young. I will definitely make sure I don't listen to any other books she narrates. This will be the first book I won't be able to finish.
