Publisher's summary

Steel Magnolias meets The Help in this Southern debut novel sparkling with humor, heart, and feminine wisdom.

Twelve-year-old CeeCee Honeycutt is in trouble. For years, she has been the caretaker of her psychotic mother, Camille-the tiara-toting, lipstick-smeared laughingstock of an entire town-a woman trapped in her long-ago moment of glory as the 1951 Vidalia Onion Queen. But when Camille is hit by a truck and killed, CeeCee is left to fend for herself. To the rescue comes her previously unknown great-aunt, Tootie Caldwell.

In her vintage Packard convertible, Tootie whisks CeeCee away to Savannah's perfumed world of prosperity and Southern eccentricity, a world that seems to be run entirely by women. From the exotic Miz Thelma Rae Goodpepper, who bathes in her backyard bathtub and uses garden slugs as her secret weapons, to Tootie's all-knowing housekeeper, Oletta Jones, to Violene Hobbs, who entertains a local police officer in her canary-yellow peignoir, the women of Gaston Street keep CeeCee entertained and enthralled for an entire summer.

Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

Delightful

What a delightful book. This book starts out dreary and the reader grieves for little ???Cee Cee Honeycutt.??? But after the tragic death of her mother, it goes on to much happier times; enabling the reader to forget the tragedy the child has gone through. The cast of characters are Southern through and through, with Oletta becoming Cee Cee???s true friend, confident and companion; while at the same time providing good ???ole Southern mothering.

This book will make the reader smile, laugh and cry at different times. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and look forward to other books by this author.

Sweeps you into a beautiful place!

This was a story that drew me in! It's a journey of a young girls world of confusion dealing with an absent father and a mother who is deteriorating before the childs eyes but brings her into a new life that is filled with the love and guidence that she desperately needs. Each character is a delight and have their own stories to add to the world of CeeCee. Not quite a "coming of age" story as much a story of coming to realize that love and life lessons can be given to us from even unlikely caretakers we may find.

LOVE this book!

Heartwarming and a must-read coming of age story. Had me rooting for the main character throughout the story. Efficiently explores the dichotomy of loving someone with mental illness and yearning for freedom from the emotional responsibility of the effected loved one. Will be rereading (re-listening) to this book a few times! Jenna Lamia is my favorite narrator ever and her voice fit this story perfectly. Give this book a try, you won’t regret it.

Narration Took it to a Higher Level

I loved listening to this book because the author did a great job of putting the reader into Cece's shoes. But I will have to say that the narration by Jenna Lamia took this story to another level for me. Jenna did an excellent job of a providing a tone and rhythm for the many characters in this book that gave allowed my imagination to build vision of each person individually. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
