Sam's Letters to Jennifer

Dear Listener,
Have you ever gotten a letter that changed your life completely? It happened to me once. I still can feel the urgency that overtook me as I opened the envelope and the hunger I felt for whatever that letter would say. It seemed as if my entire life hung in the balance as I read.

Publisher's Summary

Dear Listener,
Have you ever gotten a letter that changed your life completely? It happened to me once. I still can feel the urgency that overtook me as I opened the envelope and the hunger I felt for whatever that letter would say. It seemed as if my entire life hung in the balance as I read.

Sam's Letters to Jennifer is a novel about that kind of drama. In it, a woman is summoned back to the town where she grew up. And in the house where she spent her most magical years she finds a series of letters addressed to her. Each of those letters is a piece of a story that will upend completely the world she thought she knew, and throw her into a love more powerful than she ever imagined could be possible. Two extraordinary love stories are entwined here, full of hope and pain and emotions that never die down.

I hope you'll enjoy this novel as much as I've enjoyed writing it. It's not often that you get a letter that changes your life. But it should happen to everyone at least once.

Yours,
James Patterson

    "Too Sweet for Me"

Our heroine lost her parents, husband, baby ... and that is just the first 3 minutes ... we haven't even got to the SAD part yet. Hmm, maybe there is a reason why the author wrote the "review" instead of Publisher's Weekly.

I would expect that unless you really like a tear jerker, this book might be too sweet for you. It is a big change from his usual writing style. I'D STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU LISTEN TO THE SAMPLE BEFORE YOU BUY TO SEE IF YOU LIKE THE TONE. Please keep in mind that the music will follow you from start to end.

In any case, I gave the book 3 stars:
    1. Even at James' worst, he is still darn good
    2. It is a nice message of hope and the power of love
    3. At 4+ hours at least he doesn't take too long

    "A GRANDMOTHER'S AWAKENING"

Being a dedicated James Patterson fan, I ordered this book with some trepidation. However, after listening to it, I now believe James Patterson to be a man of many levels and souls. Not only is he the best mystery writer of our generation, he can also write a book with a lot of feeling in it. This book touched the depths of my soul and made me cry (real tears), which is dangerous inasmuch as I listen to all my Audible books in my car. It also was an inspiration for me to do something similar for my granddaughter who is now 6. What better way to leave a legacy to your grandchildren than this. The only difference is I will probably leave mine in audio rather than written but who knows, with computers, I may just write it down. Anyone who criticizes this book either does not have grandchildren or has no feelings. I strongly recommend this book just don't look for Alex Cross or anyone to get murdered. Just open your mind and heart and enjoy!

    "Enjoyable"

I decided to buy this book because I had been pleasantly surprised by James Patterson's Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas.

While it wasn't as good as Suzanne's Diary (which had more of a surprise at the end) and although it was perhaps a bit melodramatic, I enjoyed this book quite a lot.

    "total disappointment"

I picked this audiobook because I am a James Patterson fan and have read all his previous books. I enjoyed his previous book "Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas" and hoped that this book would be similar. I am sorry to say that this book is one of his worst. "The Lake House" was a true disappointment and I didn't think he could write anything more pathetic, but "Letters" beats it hands down. The story was a lame and predictable. "I love you so much" is heard every few minutes and got to be quite sickening. It doesn't even deserve the one star! Patterson is so much better than this...

    "Sadly disappointing read"

I give two stars because I was curious enough about the letters to stick with the story til the end. Otherwise I'd give 1. This story was so transparent, you could see what was coming all the way through. I wished he would have written the story about Sam and just left Jennifers out. Although I found the telling of Sams story to not be all that I wanted it to be. I found Brendans illness to be thrown in just to give some type of conflict to Jennifer's story, otherwise she would have none. Her past is sad, but that was all her story line really had going for it. I prefer stories with more meat on them! I expected this tale to be the type I prefer. I was sadly disappointed.

"I Dare You to Not Love this Book!"

You can't put it down, you can't sleep - this book is amazing from beginning to end, you'll feel great, you'll love Jennifer and Brendan and Sam and "Doc" - it's not all happiness, I haven't cried this hard from a book in a while, and you will too...but I promise you a great ending...and I didn't want it to end. The only, only critique I have of the narration is - why the music competing with the narration (this is not all the time, here and there) take it out! Not needed..otherwise, excellent narration, excellent, excellent story, one of my "Unforgettables".

    "Short and sweet but boring"

This is your typical love story. It was short and sweet but predictable and boring. It will make you smile but will be completely forgetable.

    "Sam's Letters to Jennifer"

I loved this book and thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the two different stories. I couldn't wait until Jennifer read the next letter.

    "badly-written, predictable, wannabe"

This was my first James Patterson and I bought it based on the good reviews. Booooooooooy was I disappointed! The dialogue is sooooo corny that even real-life conversations are less cliche than this! There is a clear attempt to be sweet, and to follow Nicholas Spark's type of book, but it falls short. The music was also quite frequent and annoying and came at weird times, not always adding to the drama (which was often over-dramatized anyway). There was really no buildup to the love stories so I didn't even like those. And why would anyone write letters to her granddaughter and keep them at home instead of actually sending them???? I would hope James Patterson's thrillers are better written than this
