"Genuinely suspenseful and at times remarkably original." (Publishers Weekly)
Knowledge is knowing the way. Wisdom is looking for an alternative, more interesting road to get there. Audiobooks are that road.
I have read many of Picoult's books, I enjoyed Salem Falls as much as My Sister's Keeper and Plain Truth. It had just enough of everything in it. Family drama, courtroom drama, teenage drama, relationship drama. All the ingredients of a winner.
The only criticism I have is it was predictable, right down to the last line in the story. I still loved the journey it took me on. Picoult is really good at character building. Although I found some of the characters weak, I felt a connectionl.
Julia Gibson gives her usual stellar performance. You can actually hear the attitude in her inflection when she reads the part of Jilly the brat that accuses Jack St. Bride of sexual assault. She never over acts. The story follows the path of a really good "made for TV movie"
Salem Falls was a satisfying listen. I'm sorry it's over. High recommended.
This book is supposed to be so good, I cannot get past the breathing, swallowing and voice clearing the reader is doing. Wasn't there a mute button. All the other Jodi Picoult books I have listened to have been great. This one is hurting to try to get past the bad recording.
While I was listening to this book, I really enjoyed it. Looking at it critically for a review, I will say while enjoyable, it is not my favorite Picoult book. There's no doubt that Picoult is talented and has a wonderful writing style. However, I found some points of the plot unbelivable, and other parts too similar to previous novels. To me, this story seemed like it followed too much of the "formua" that was created in her other successful books, and it made this book less original for me.
If you are a first-time Picoult listener, read "My Sister's Keeper" or "Nineteen Minutes." My Sister's Keeper, as an audiobook, is sheer brilliance.
Jodi Picoult is good but she does get boring after awhile. This story is long. It seems the love interest of the main character goes to extremes: she loves him, she doubts him, she loves him, she needs to check his story out, and over and over again. In the meantime, he never says "Boo!" to stick up for himself.
The group of young girl possible victims are a bunch of spoiled brats. No one ever says "Boo!" to them to acknowledge their bad behaviors.
The ending is almost predictable. But then, since Picoult's book have begun to follow a pattern, what is a surprise about that?
If you haven't read much by her, then this will be enjoyable. But if you have, save your credit. I wish I hadn't bought so many by her.
Set as a modern day “Crucible” this book delivers on so many counts. It has high drama, love, a thrilling court trial and many twists and turns. I thoroughly enjoyed it and believed the characters and the story. The high school Wiccan girls stir up trouble in this isolated N.H. town as a way to get attention. No one character is painted in black and white but rather in every color of the rainbow. The narrator was excellent. Definitely buy this book!
I usually enjoy Jodi's books but this book was very disappointing and boring. I felt this book was a waste of listening time. Perhaps the author is cranking out too many books.
I have listened to several of Jodi Picoult's books, and this didn't disappoint me, it's one of the best. I highly recommend it.
I have enjoyed other Jodi Picoult books, but unfortunately, I had this ending figured out pretty quickly. Not quite as good as some of her newer work.
"Starts slowly and then takes off"
At first nothing much happens as we're introduced to the many characters who will feature in the story. There are a lot of characters to keep track of but gradually the protagonists become clear in this story of a struggle for truth. The central character is Jack St Bride who arrives as a mysterious stranger in Salem Falls and gets work as a dish-washer in Addie's diner. Both Jack and Addie have had tragedies in their lives. We learn that Jack was a school-teacher who has been in prison for the last 8 months on a charge of having had sexual relations with an under-age pupil. He claims he is innocent but agreed to a plea-bargain to get a reduced sentence.
The title 'Salem Falls' is a clue to the main theme of book: the witch-hunts of the late 17th century in Sale, resonate through the story as Jack is hounded by the local populace once they discover his past. He gets accused of rape and the narrative takes off as he is brought to court and the author keeps the listener on tenter-hooks until the very end as evidence for and against his guilt is excitingly presented. I couldn't stop listening it was so touch and go.
The reader is very good and she helps one to keep track of the many different characters by changing her voice and accent. The author has a very colourful descriptive style with loads of similes.
"One of her best stories"
The end, because it had me shouting "I knew it!"
If I tell you it might spoil the story :p
Actually, she had me confused a few times when she didn't pause long enough before starting the next paragraph.
Yes. I listened to each parts all at once, three 6 hours sittings
I think this is one of the best books, its most definitely one of my favourite Jodi Picoult books so far. You want to believe he's innocent but if you've read/heard any of her other books in the past you will know that there are always unexpected twists and this one is no different.
"A wondeful moving interesting book"
I listened to this book on my two weeks holiday and it lasted on and off until my day of return. It is one of the best books I have ever read and I did not want it too end. The narrators were perfect and fitted the characters perfectly. The story line was moving and very interesting especially the legal side of things.
"A compulsive listen."
One of those that you don't want to stop listening to - and I didn't guess the twist at the end.
