Publisher's summary

It is the color of the Virgin Mary's cloak, a dazzling pigment desired by artists, an exquisite hue infused with danger, adventure, and perhaps even the supernatural. It is... SacrÉ Bleu.

In July 1890, Vincent van Gogh went into a cornfield and shot himself. Or did he? Why would an artist at the height of his creative powers attempt to take his life... and then walk a mile to a doctor's house for help? Who was the crooked little "color man" Vincent had claimed was stalking him across France? And why had the painter recently become deathly afraid of a certain shade of blue?

These are just a few of the questions confronting Vincent's friends - baker-turned-painter Lucien Lessard and bon vivant Henri Toulouse-Lautrec - who vow to discover the truth of van Gogh's untimely death. Their quest will lead them on a surreal odyssey and brothel-crawl deep into the art world of late 19th century Paris.

Oh la la, quelle surprise, and zut alors! A delectable confection of intrigue, passion, and art history - with cancan girls, baguettes, and fine French cognac thrown in for good measure - Sacre Bleu is another masterpiece of wit and wonder from the one, the only, Christopher Moore.

Fabulous!!

Where does Sacre Bleu rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Up at the top. The performance was fantastic.

If you could take any character from Sacre Bleu out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Henri. He would make me feel like a goddess.

Any additional comments?

"Accident. Couldn't be helped." Best line from a book ever! Read it and you'll know why! I was laughing so hard at some points, I had to pull over! Thank you, Christopher Moore, and thank you, Euan Morton. I'm off to read another Moore/Morton combo.

Delightful for lovers of art

I always enjoy historical fiction with a twist, and Moore's book did not disappoint. I am also a lover of the impressionists, and it was a delight to watch these figures come to life. A must read!

It was dicey at first..............

If you are looking for a laugh out loud, hysterically funny Christopher Moore book, this is not that book.
That said - it is an awesome book, I loved it.
Once I got over waiting for a punch line around every corner. In my defense I had just come off of reading the two Fool books when I picked this one up.
I spent the first couple of chapters waiting for something funny to happen, when it didn't I changed my expectations, started the book over again and thoroughly enjoyed it. I love art and art history so that was part of my enjoyment, it may not be to some people's taste but all in all thoroughly enjoyable book.

Ok to skip this one.

A well written book, but is comes across as dull with all of the art history. The last third of the book is the better portion with most of the character action and story development.

A positive the I felt towards the end was how Moore incorporates so many artist into the story as important characters rather than just bad cameos.

Deliciously irreverent

A delightful lighthearted magical romp through time and art, always with the enchantment of ultramarine blue, artists’ color of divine mystery.

original, interesting, unconventional

Surprising storyline addressing a subject not very often present in books: painters, even famous ones and a glimpse into their lives through a fantasy lens - especially in what concerns the incarnation of the concept of muse and inspiration.

Not one of Moore's best

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes. Only if they are dedicated to Christopher Moore's books. Otherwise I would pass on this one.

Would you recommend Sacre Bleu to your friends? Why or why not?

No; not unless they were dedicated to reading all of Christopher Moore's books. Listening to other of his books would be worth the time.

What does Euan Morton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Euan did an excellent job at all the characters. He made a someone dry story much more interesting.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No

Any additional comments?

The book was not one of Christopher Moore's best. It had some humorous points but it was slow in developing and there was too much detail regarding the art.
