Publisher's summary

After discovering six gold Roman coins buried in the mud of the Devil's Dyke, Barnabas Sackett enthusiastically invests in goods that he will offer for trade in America. But Sackett has a powerful enemy: Rupert Genester, nephew of an earl, wants him dead. A battlefield promise made to Sackett’s father threatens Genester’s inheritance. So on the eve of his departure for America, Sackett is attacked and thrown into the hold of a pirate ship. Genester's orders are for him to disappear into the waters of the Atlantic. But after managing to escape, Sackett makes his way to the Carolina coast. He sees in the raw, abundant land the promise of a bright future. But before that dream can be realized, he must first return to England and discover the secret of his father's legacy.

Great Start

I heard this audio book a few years ago and decided to buy it to listen again. This is the kick of story for the Saketts series. I listen to these books driving truck and this book is a real mile burner, and one you hate to hear end. However the next in the series (To The Far Blue Mountains) picks up where this book ends. The whole series doesn't do that, but the first few do because it's about a journey from England to America and across America over several generations. Most of the later books are stories of Saketts all over the country in the "Wild West" days of America. So if you're interested in a book that will at least keep you going through the first five books in the series, then this is a powerful start.

I enjoy Louie L'Amour

Louie is GREAT. I have, I believe, every one of his books, in paperback. The choice of the reader of this book, I believe was very good. I have a few of Louie's dramatized audio short stories, that keep your attention the whole book. This reader does very well. His accent is approperate as well. It deserves more than Five Stars. Someone deserves a job; "Well Done".

What all American males need...

In Sackett's Land, LL provides us American men with a thing we grievously lack in our society today - a man whom we'd like to be and whom we'd wish our sons to become.

Barnabas is a man who merely wants to live his life in freedom - freedom to be all he has the talent, desire and ability before his Creator to be without interference by a bullying system or government. He's a man who wants to treat and be treated fairly, and who will stand up to any who would impose their own petty 'justice' upon him. Even if it's the most powerful monarch in the world.

Barnabas Sackett is the kind of man who made America the envy of the world. He's the kind of man we so desperately need today. And he's the kind of man no self-serving government bureaucrat wants on the loose - one who will call that kind of weasel out of its hole and challenge it, even against the odds.

Barnabas Sackett is a HERO, a man of character and honor who trains his own sons to be HEROES, the kind of hero every young man needs in order to inspire him to true greatness.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Mr. Lucky

This dirt poor farmer is walking in the woods, when he discovers some gold coins half buried on his land. Later he gets into a sword fight with a noble and he kicks the noble's butt, a hanging offense. Within five minutes he is best friends with a man he has never meet, but helps him escape the noble. Sackett who until now has lived by himself in a swamp is a natural born leader and men flock to him. He is bigger, faster and smarter then his fellow countrymen and even native American Indians. He is superman and luckyman. When he escapes pirates who are suppose to kill him, but don't, to America, the ship he is looking for with his soon to be girlfriend arrives at the American Coast at the exact spot where he is (twice). The amount of things that just fall into this guys lap happen so often it becomes comical.

If you listen to this, make sure and turn off your brain.

Great Historical Adventure

Sackett's Land is a wonderful adventure story. It is very different from most of the othe LL books I have read or listened to. Different BUT NOT bad -- it is a superb story of swashbuckling proportions. It is an audio book I had to listen to straight through!

LL really hit upon an area or subject of perpetual interest to me. It's a great story -- listen to it & enjoy!

I love a good story

Ok, so don't tell anyone, but I love L'Amour stories. These stories are not intended to be literature, but they are really fun. Once in a while I need a good adventure with really good, tough, and clever good guys, and really dirty, mean, and nasty bad guys. This book delivers in spades!

Pure L'Amour, Simpre Fi

We write this review in amazement at the vitality, yet ease, that listening is compared to reading. Here we are laying, (number 14 in some dictionaries, grammar may sometimes be more than it is cracked to be) in bed with the lights out enjoying one of our favorite series of L'Amour books. If you haven't read Louis afore shame on you! Those of us who have.....recognize talent when we see or hear it. To hear instead of read this series is fantastic, undescribe-able, (except by us, yet). Would you think we highly recommend this audible presentation? You are allowed to bet even things you no longer have....adtomeus in love
