River Rising | [Athol Dickson]

River Rising

Welcome to Pilotville, Louisiana, 1927, an isolated outpost on the Mississippi River - a stilt village bounded by swampland, accessible only by boat, an island of brotherly love in a sea of racism. Meet Hale Poser, a stranger who's come looking for his roots. He's a humble man, a righteous man, a miracle man. In the swamp beyond the cypress and the tupelo, and veiled by Spanish moss, lies a lingering evil. For years it slept in dreadful isolation. Now comes Hale Poser, and it will sleep no more.

Publisher's Summary

Welcome to Pilotville, Louisiana, 1927, an isolated outpost on the Mississippi River - a stilt village bounded by swampland to the horizon, accessible only by boat, an island of brotherly love in a sea of racism. Meet Hale Poser, a stranger with a bad hip who's come looking for his roots. He's a humble man, a righteous man, a miracle man.

In the swamp beyond the cypress and the tupelo, and veiled by Spanish moss, lies a lingering evil. For years it slept in dreadful isolation. Now comes Hale Poser, and it will sleep no more. It will rain down on Pilotville, it will rise up like a river, and nothing but a miracle can stop this awful flood.

    "Thought-provoking"

I love books that keep me thinking long after I have finished them. This one ranks in my top ten favorite books of all time. If you enjoy pondering questions like "what constitutes a miracle, and what is mere coincidence?" or "why are some people born in affluence and others poverty?" this is a great read. This is Christian literature with deep theological themes. The characters are very original and the conflicts between blacks and whites defy old stereotypes. Even as a white woman, I was able to identify with the black male character and gained new understanding for his struggles. Don't expect a predictable ending. If you seek to understand the symbolism in this story, you will find the ending quite satisfying. This is a book about the hope that is offered when we truly yield to the love of Christ. I recommend it to anyone interested in such hope.

Hard to stop listening once I started. A blend of beautiful descriptions, compelling characters and profound message rarely found in fiction today.

    "Balderdash"

I'm angry with myself for searching for almost an hour for a "good read" to spend my last monthly credit on. Didn't know this author, but when I read he had a "Christy Award," I decided to go for it. Later on, I learned Christy stands for Christian. Oh, well, live and learn, even if it did cost me a credit. The operative word is "inspirational". Well, reading is enlightening, isn't it? I persevered because as a child, I would read anything, including the backs of cereal boxes. lol.
