What the Critics Say

"A grand tale of intrigue, deception, true love and exile." (Denver Post)
"Smith knows his subject: his graphic depiction of lust, bloodletting, politics, and, in Taita's case, honor is firmly grounded in rich details that evoke the period." (Booklist)

    "Highly recommended"

I read River God years ago. I lost sleep. I missed college classes. I'm not sure, but I may have referred to my self as "Tiata" for a few weeks. The story was full of interesting characters, wit, potty humor, fascinating story, and information about one of my favorite ancient civilizations. It was as if it had been written just for me. When I finished I was reluctant to set it aside, so, in desperation, I read the authors note. I was amazed to discover that, according to the note, the story was not written by Wilbur Smith. He claimed It was written by a slave thousands of years ago and sealed in a tomb, and that the archeologists who discovered it had given him the task of rewriting the story as a novel for modern readers. He worked from a translation, adding only some modern terminology. Cool beans.

Dick Hill was the perfect reader. His performance became the standard by which I judge all others.

    Give this book a chance.

    "River God review"

After trying, then failing, to read (I just couldn't get into it) River God, I decided to "give it another go" by listening to it. What a transformation a good reader makes! I listen to my Audible books in the car and there were times I couldn't wait to take a ride. Dick Hill brings this book to life as though I were watching an enthralling play. One of the best "reads" ever.

"Ancient Egypt narrated by Taita the Eunuch"

I love Wilbur Smith's egyptian series. Taita, the eunuch and narrator, is a slave of unusually high status. His intelligence and myterious ways, makes him powerful. He is subtle in his approach to manipulate his owners.

I enjoy the narrative, Dick Hill takes me on to Egypt in the era when the pharaohs ruled. It is as if you are really there.

If we suspend disbelief when we read Smith's accounts, which are not always historically accurate, you will travel through time and perceive in your mind's eye the beauty and brutality of living in that era.

    "Great Book"

I really liked this book. A nice insight into life in ancient Egypt. I was hesitant because the story was rather long (over 20 hours) but the plot kept moving and the characters were very interesting. Narration was very good. I look for for books read by Dick Hill. If you like historical novels please read this one. Looking forward to more Wilbur Smith books.

    "River God"

With all the problems in Egypt today I thought I would read about ancient Egypt. Dick Hill did great job reading this story. The book also sent me off the encyclopedia to look up information mention in the story to see if it was real or fiction. I was amazed to find so much of it was true. Great story.

    "One of the best . . ."

Highly recommend this series of books (4) for anyone with even a hint of an imagination. The tapestry this author creates before your mind's eye in is nothing less than fascinating! As the story is woven from one CD to the next one can see the characters and the world they live in develop and unfold in living detail as the narrator adds one more row of threads to the story. For days after listening to a section of the book I can see the scene described almost as though I was one of the major players in the story. Three of the four books are available via this medium, it would be nice to have book 2 available so the series is complete.

    "Epic in everyway it counts"

This was my first expereince with a Wilbur Smith tale. It does not disappoint. If you wish to come to know the time of the Pharaohs then look no further. Smith writes history suberbly and masks it as a work of fiction. Read on and come to know the Egypt of legend.

    "WOW! What an awesome book!"

This is just an absolutely amazing book! The story and the narrator were excellent. I must say that I was quite shocked to find out that in ancient Egypt they married girls who were 12 years old. Also, I was a little disturbed by the reference of masters having slave boys which nowadays is definitely child molestation. I guess hitorically speaking, that's what life was like back then. I must say that the narrator was fantastic. Just to give you an idea, when Taita was telling about the day he was made an eunuch, the narrator told it so well that as I was driving home from work, I literally almost fainted - I had to pull over and recompose myself. I guess it was so real that it felt like I was there watching the castration being done. The story itself was amazing. This is another must listen.
